Disclaimer: This is an omake fanfic of a Quest (fanfic) called To Boldly Go, based primarily on Star Trek. I don't own anything, yadda yadda.

AN: Quick background. So we (the players in the quest) had just started prototyping our first Ambassador class ship, when the dice gods destroyed the Enterprise B. So we managed to sweet talk our GMs to let us double-build the Ambassador prototype, with the second one slated to become the Enterprise C. Naturally, it's launch is not a quite affair, and this takes place at the end of 2321.Q4, right before sh*t hits the fan...

Contains some cameos from TOS characters, a subtle reference to young!Picard, a brief meetup of the Tenipuri Data-pair expies...

AN: Featuring the Kaidoh-expie finally graduating, and a prelude to the launch of our long awaited, quest-designed science ship. Also, yes, a subtle HL-expie. Takes place in 2324.Q4.M2.

Finally, 2321.Q3 rolled around in-game, which is when Picard made his first attempt at applying for Starfleet Academy. TNG implies that applications happen once a year. Picard was successful in his second attempt, which was 2322, and became a cadet for the 2323 school-year.

Boothby is the canonical groundskeeper for Starfleet Academy who’s been there forever even Picard was at the academy.

Andrea Brand is another canon character taken from TNG.

I’m leaving it up in the air for now whether Mr. Andrew is in fact, the future Ian Andrew Troi. I’ve always felt it made more sense if he’d taken Lwaxanna Troi’s surname rather than the other way around. Ms. Zaheva and Ms. Hayes may or may not be canon characters. It would be a little too much coincidence if they all were, honestly. But I'm just leaving some room open for future stories.

Inspired by the recent name vote (where we named our shiny new Enterprise-C!), and the fact that there are indeed canonical Starfleet ships bearing the name USS Equicon and USS Da-Teplan. I thought they sounded rather Gaeni and Qloathi (both OC species), respectively. Also, the canon Equicon is itself named after a series of fan conventions, so it’s a double reference!

This plot bunny bit out of the blue. It's a direct sequel to The Definition of Life. Basically, the in-game reward for the previous omake was to have Mipek and Yanag assigned to the USS Lightning, which is running the experimental testbed for the isolinear computer system before we can roll that out to the fleet. (And as a result, Lightning gets a +1 science stat out of it too.)

Then, I looked over the Q2 logs for the Lightning, and lo and behold, they had a mission to the computer-phobic Arcadian Empire. And so, this fic happened.

Also, I guess I'm starting to fill out the non-Seigaku expies. Though at this point, I'm just using the Tenipuri characters as the basis for coming up with names and rough job/skill profiles. Characterization is not going to be the same since they're not all high school tennis players.

Just to say this right off the bat, I wasn’t really aiming for suspenseful court drama for this omake, more fanservice-dressed soapboxing. That said, it also isn't intended to be an in depth essay to defend AI rights. I’m sure there are dissertations worth of that stuff elsewhere on the net. I structured things to be centered more around interesting cameos and the POV they might be able to offer, and what would make sense from an in-universe and in-character perspective.

To give a bit of background, Mipek was an alien probe/AI found by the USS Odyssey, and joined that ship as an observer/crew for Captain Mbeki's last year or so before he retired to go into politics. Since then, it has been living in Sol without problems for 2+ years now. So what changed to suddenly create this conflict? Well, the obvious antagonist was the Daystrom Institute and its record of problems with AI in Trek, and they just happened to have started researching the latest gen of starship computer cores as of the last research vote in-game.

I suppose, in another timeline where they actually brought up the M5 in the court case, this court drama would be an actual drama with the big reveal being DI was trying to revive the M5 program and sneak AIs into starships. And then Vice Admiral Eaton would put her foot down. Here however, they were savvy enough to cut their losses. After all, losing this one research request wouldn't hurt them as much as being kicked off their research spot would have been.

Absent that, this is mainly going to be about Mipek, and whether it gets to be treated as a sapient life form. In light of that (and previous depictions), there wasn't much room for the plot to go. So I ended up picking the fanservice soapbox route. *shrug*

As another aside, I'm proud I managed to sneak "yudan sezu ni ikou" in there for my Tezuka expy. ^_-

Foonotes:

Anthony Haftel is a canon character from TNG. Hopefully he'll learn his lesson here and not try to take away Data's kid in the future. Or maybe he'll come back later as an antagonist when we find Data. Who knows.

Areel Shaw is a canon character from TOS. I flipped a coin to see if she'd be too old to show up. But anyway, the last org chart I saw for the JAG department didn't have many high ranking spots anyway, so I guess most people there just languish at lower ranks or something...

Aaron Satie is yet another canon character from TNG. He was required reading for Picard at the Academy (and that's coming up soon too!) so he should be a famous judge around the current time.

For once, this is an omake with only canon characters, no OCs. It came about when we assigned Commodore Saavik to head a task force that got into a fight. They won (narrowly), with only 1 ship lost. Unfortunately, the destroyed ship was the flagship of the TF, the USS Kumari, and it was destroyed by a warp core breach. Meaning, everyone died on it, including our flag officer. Kinda sad, since we've sent out task forces to fight before with OCs at the head, and they all made it though. I guess Saavik has just had awful luck by the dice rolls throughout this game-quest.

Anyway, after seeing the combat results, I originally wanted to write an omake on Spock's reaction to what happened. Unfortunately, it turned out that trying to write Vulcan grief was like bashing my head against a wall, so I gave up and went for easier pickings. As it turned out, the career timeline of our current Commander of Starfleet, Sulu, jived really well with Saavik's career timeline. So, this fic happened.

Both cadet OCs are Tenipuri expies. I decided not to make it part 5 of The Academy by the Bay series since it doesn't take place in San Francisco, mostly.

Anyway, to understand the background...
- Here is a brief on the Apiata species. I'm using the female pronouns for queens, and neutral pronouns for drones (b/c all da zzzz's).
- Michel Thuir is an official NPC of TBG, first seen as a captain of uncommon good sense at the beginning of the quest, and has since moved up the ranks due to having the favor of the players.

Finished Part 6
Previous: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5

Also made small edits to the previous parts to account for the new changes. Some notes regarding major setting changes:

* Since PJ pushed Gundabad as another major enemy location in the Hobbit films, I shoehorned it in here as well since the xover setting is half-half movieverse vs bookverse as things go. It's also my excuse of where the Sons of Elrond and the Northern Dunedain were in the movie timeline for them to not appear at all in the LOTR movies.

* Didn't manage to get screentime with Thranduil in, to my own chagrin. Then again, I wrote so much on his backstory that I guess this is sort of a break. Still working on Part 7 and that will have some more.

* So the way I'm meshing together the movie & book timeline is that the Battle of Five Armies in movie canon (and in this xover TL) took place 17 years later than it had in book canon. Coincidentally, the time between Bilbo and then Frodo leaving for Rivendell would also take 17 years less time than it would have in book canon, so that balances out. This way, Aragorn would've been around 27 at the time of BOFA (and hence it would actually make sense for Thranduil to send Legolas off to find a pal who's not a 10 year old boy). But it also means that the ages of the Kings of Dale will need to be pushed back a bit. Bain was 18 at the time of BOFA in the movies, and so here he's still the king instead of his son Brand. Not that I've gotten to showing them yet, of course. That's also in the next part.

* Still conflicted on what I'm going to do with Denethor, especially since I'm moving closer to movie characterization for him. (Mostly cuz I don't care much about him. The people I like I tend to take the best parts of both movie and book characterization, I find. =P) Maybe I'll end up just siccing Galadriel on him. Hehe.

* Modified Arwen's part a bit...still not too satisfied with her non-part. Also need to figure out what I'm going to do with Eowyn. We need more strong female characters dangit. Eh... part of the problem is that I'm mainly writing from the POV of the SI characters, so we don't really get to see a lot of the stuff going on elsewhere. I should maybe write a separate interlude in tandem with the storyline covering all the NPC stuff going on. Ugh. But that's also so much work.

It started with me writing out my headcanon for the backstory of the LOTR setting that I'm using for the YvtW xover.

Basically starting with the movie-verse as a baseline and then start making changes, adding things, and explaining things from a different pov to align more book-verse themes/characterization/etc. to it. I still have a huge infodump file. And a genealogy graph (so I can keep my OCs straight).

Then I started writing post-Hobbit:BOFA plot and dialogue. So I thought... eh, I can put fic snippets in a separate file. Now, 60+ Google doc pages later, I...pretty much have a full fledged fic.

Part 1 - Fall & Winter After BOFA
Part 2 - Spring & Summer After BOFA

Total of 27k+ words. That's like half a nanowrimo. I... I don't even know where all these words came from.

Also, my muses are demanding I write First Age Silm-fic set in Doriath, a backstory to the backstory.

Halp.

Previous: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4

Yeah I still haven't decided on Faramir's fate yet. *shrug*

I dropped all the extra dragons and stuff from the original version, because honestly, they're not needed. I think I've kept things more in line with canon and still made for an effective narrative.

Plans for part 6...I want to incorporate more of Mirkwood and possibly Dale/Erebor - which means that part won't get written until I see Hobbit 3 and decide what to keep/discard. I did have one scene already with Thranduil, and that is also still subject to retcon.

As for the segue into the Afterlife arc, it doesn't make sense anymore for Aragorn to bring up the connection. If [personal profile] ossian approves, I want to use character from the Simarillion. I have two potential candidates, so let me know who you prefer.

* Tuor - He's similar to the PCs in that he wasn't born immortal, which gives a mechanism to introduce some background meta stuff. Canonically known to have dropped off the map, so to speak, for a long time. His Edain heritage may give him the freedom to 'travel beyond the circle of the world' which sounds like an euphemism for d-travel. Also, he would bring together 4 generations of direct lineage (Tuor - Earendil - Elrond - Elladan/Elrohir) which could make for some interesting family drama.

* Maglor - Another wanderer whose fate is unknown since the end of the First Age. He would introduce lots of potential conflict/drama. Given that as long as the Andromeda is around, Earendil's Simaril is technically within reach, a lot of people (including the PCs) would get all paranoid about the Doom with Maglor around. Elrond would likely have some mixed feelings about the guy due to being kidnapped/raised by him. And even putting aside the Silmaril, I suspect Earendil would not like him for the same reason.

New: Part 4
Previous: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

Notes:

- Going with a saner Paths of the Dead thing (see last entry). Which means we only get quickly where we are going due to explicit cheating rather than via the magic of scene change. Also, ditching the CGI ghosts at Pelargir because it would be a little too anti-climatic to bring them to Minas Tirith, since I don't plan on having more than just the one big battle there.

- Just realized while researching while rewriting: Shelob is a Bug/Poison type by pokemon standards. Bug/Poison are vulnerable to Fire/Psychic types. CBY, who killed Shelob, used Fire (lightsaber) and Psychic (Dark Side Force) attacks. Wow, it all works out!

- Feeling really sorry for Faramir after everything I've done (and will do further) to him. By the same respects, if I need Denethor alive, it'll be so I can torture him. Narratively speaking, that is. My PC doesn't do torture.

- According to wiki, Theodred is like 10+ years older than Eomer/Eowyn. However, his movie actor looks really young. So I am retconning my continuity based on the movie actor and making him the same age as Eowyn, and thus younger than Eomer.

- Eowyn does end up going to Gondor with the army anyway. So... who else should I kill/maim off? *eg*

LOTR stuff

tanithryudo: (Hard at Work)
It started with Hobbit II, and me trawling tumblr for pics. That led to reading linked articles about Tolkien in general, which somehow led me to go back and re-read the YvtW story arc for LOTR. And well, I ended up starting the re-write of that shebang that I'd always wanted to do but could never work up the motivation.

[personal profile] ossian, if you can read these, let me know what you think: Chapter 1 Chapter 2

Those were the easy parts. When we did the original thread, only FOTR had come out, so TTT and ROTK were entirely based on the book (entire sections were lifted almost verbatim) and not the movies. So the later parts will pretty much need to be completely re-written to incorporate more movie canon.

Anyway, some stuff that occured to me while (re-)plotting and trying to strike a balance between book and movie...
