I just finished the main storyline mission last night, and have been still excited about it since then!

Ok, the first half of the story was boring and tedious. I get they were necessary as setup for the later parts. But it felt like a bunch of monologues one after the other. But! The last...1/3-1/4 of the story, just, wow! The climax this time was excellent! I would even say it's the best one so far: 3.3 > 3.0 > 3.2 > 3.1.

I know some people complained about how Aglaea's death almost completely took place off screen. We don't even get a cinematic about her dead body or whatever. But eh, I feel like we already got a glimpse of that during previous cinematics about the prophesized end of all the heroes involved in the Flame Chase quest. What I did like was that the story used the short segment related to her death to further develop her character. At first the audience is led to believe it as caused by the remnants of her humanity, ie. her mortal weakness and soft heart (which we'd all thought had been worn away). But then we find out that nope, there was no soft heart involved, it was a PR plot she masterminded herself, using her predicted impending death as a tool to destroy her political enemies and a catalyst to spur the growth of her protege. So yeah, still the same old Aglaea.

As for the slow unravelling about the truth history of the Sky people and Hyacine's lineage was paced fairly well, in retrospect, even if the first half was slow. The "twist" in the story was of course not unexpected, because we all know there was gonna be a twist and most likely, the good/evil bits of the legend is not gonna be the truth. However the actual true history that did came out wasn't too cliched (I was honestly half expecting the hero of legend to be more of a villain, or maybe even completely unrelated to the plight of the Sky people), but it holds up to its internal logic and is quite understandable, and very thematically appropriate for a (Greek) tragedy.

The climax boss fight was very well animated. I brought what I thought was a pretty good team, but still got stomped in Phase 3. I am not even sure if I hit all the major animation/story dialogue triggers in that fight... might need to search up some videos of it online to make sure I didn't miss any cool sequences.

Then came the story-side climax of Cipher's death. OMG! Here all this time I thought she was just the catgirl fanservice and gag character. And looking at reddit, I was not the only one who thought this. But as it turns out, she is the actual MVP of Amphoreus. Forget AtlasKephale. It was a f*cking thief who held together the world for the last 700+ years with her f*cking lies.

Looking back, the previous depictions of Cipher takes on a whole new meaning. She was chided by her fellow heroes for disregarding her duties as a demigod and fleeing all conflict... but now we know that's because she was already literally carrying the world on her shoulders, and her death would cause it all to fall apart, so of course she wouldn't risk conflict when she can run. Aglaea couldn't understand why Cipher suddenly turned her back on their friendship and couldn't stand to live in the same city anymore... but now we know it's precisely because of their friendship that Cipher couldn't run the risk of anyone getting to close to her to realize the Grand Con she was running, because the world must believe her Lie for it to remain Truth, and so she had to go into self-exile to minimize anyone getting close to her.

And now, at the end of the Grand Quest, when all the other coreflames of the old gods have been claimed and the heroes are so close to resetting things into a brand new world... Now, finally, Cipher choses to enter the conflict, set herself as bait for the Flame Reaver, and essentially sacrifice herself for one last gambit. She dies alone, with almost no one to know the truth that it was her who truly protected Ohkema up to this time. But she still bought enough time for Hyacine to take up the mantle of the sky and bring down the protection of her rainbow, and protected the last coreflame for our heroes to finish their task when we get back to the city.

Like, I was previously thinking of pulling for Cipher because I really like her art design. But now, I am totally all for Cipher as our catgirl woobie goddess!! *squee~~*

Ahem, other stuff I liked about the story... my boy Dan Heng finally remembered his dragon form!! LOL. It's like the first time since the original Xianzhou arc (the brief showing in Penacony climax turned out to be a dream, after all). We also get to see him sync with the waters of Amphoreus, study with the priests of the local sea god, and learn how to use the magic waters to open travel gates (like, whoa?). I wished we got to see more of his fight as DHIL against the Flame Reaver, but at least we know he's probably not gonna die like the other local heroes did, what with him rumored on getting a new 5 star banner up next patch. Looking forward for that as well.

Finished playing through the main story mission and have browsed some of the stuff on reddit and CN forums. Figure I'd write down my thoughts while it's all fresh.

First of all, the story continues to be pretty consistent with previous patches. The pacing is definitely benefiting from given so many patches to work with, compared to earlier story arcs having to be smushed into 3-4 patches. On the other hand, the downside of this elongated storyline is also starting to show, in that we are *still* in the "buildup" phase of this world, and it is feeling a little more bland each time, with the per-patch endings no longer being quite enough to feel like a "climax".

Also, the story continues to do a good job of focusing on the banner characters of the patch each time, which I am guessing is something Hoyo has put effort into due to previous feedback. The upside to this is that people who pull for lore get to learn about the characters fairly deeply before deciding to purchase them. The downside, though, is that enjoyment of the story is also somewhat impacted by how much you like the focused characters in question...

-----

Castorice: I pulled her purely because I like her art design; she's really pretty. However, everything else about her after playing the story and her demos is kinda...meh. She is very obviously an archetypical "waifu" character, not really intended for my demographic.

Secondly, the whole philosophical meandering during her arc about how death sucks and she hates it and prefers the world to go back to the days of yore where everyone lived forever yadayada, and then transitioning to "learning" about how death is a necessary driving force of life/progress/etc... it's just so cliched and haven't we had this before back with the Xianzhou? Honestly I felt sleepy during some of her longer dialogue/monologue scenes.

And then gameplay wise, I can't speak for her numbers because I've been hearing contradictory stuff, but her mechanics are a bit finnicky, and I don't quite enjoy the mechanic of draining your own team's HP to fuel attack. But, she's a 5 star quantum AoE damager which I didn't have before, and she does give my Luocha a chance to be used more, so whatever I guess.

Anaxagoras: I also like his art design and will be pulling for him in the second half (even though he was probably cheated out of half his animation budget by Castorice). His personality is a lot more bombastic and standout than Cas, and I did like his role in the story for playing all sides of the politics just to use them both in order to further his own ambitions in human experimentation ala fusing divine corpses with his own soul, and then succeeding at his goals of uncovering a further layer of truth about the world, and paving the way for his future ascension to divinity... what can I say, this guy has definitely got the "mad" part down for "mad scientist", lol.

I've also seen people call him Ratio 2.0, and sure, there are some similarities between the two (both accomplished scholars, and professors teaching their knowledge/ideals to others, eccentric personalities, acerbic tongue, arrogance in their own intelligence, soft spot for promising students and cute critters, etc), but IMO, I am more likely to focus on the differences between them. The most obvious one is that Anaxa is much more ambitious, to prove his school of thought is the truth over the more pious branch of thought, to prove his theories on divinity, and to *become* divinity in order to reshape the future world. Ratio, OTOH, after having realized he wasn't going to gain the gaze of Nous and get invited to the Genius Society, seems to have come to terms with his current lot with the Mundanite Council of the Intelligentsia Guild; while he doesn't pursue worship of any Aeon, neither does he seek to become one and rewrite reality to remove the dumb from the world. Anaxa puts his personal goals of SCIENCE ahead of almost everything else, with politics and stuff just being stuff he manipulates to achieve personal goals. Whereas, we know Ratio is willing to work with mundane organizations such as the IPC. And y'know, maybe this is the reason why Ratio was never gonna get the attention of Nous, and why gameplay-wise, he's not an erudition unit. *rubs chin*

-----

Other updates this patch included a freebie 5 star (which I chose Ruan Mei E2) and other stuff that comes with the Anniversary. A lot of shop updates which the EN folks have been complaining about. I dunno, IMO it's the same kind of stuff I see in a lot of other mobile games, so I don't know what the fuss is about. It's not like you can't play through most of the game without pulling every banner. Nowadays I don't even try for full endgame anymore if it takes more than 2-3 build tries. It's not worth angst-ing about that extra couple dozen gems in rewards, or centering your pull goals towards that (for me, anyway).

The mini game that came with this patch is a reskin of the idle game mechanic, which I kinda liked. Almost makes me want to go back and play some of the older clicker games I've had before, until I remember how buggy bluestacks has been for me. -_-

Good news rolling in this morning.

Zhou Shen posted an update from his weibo finally and looks to be in good spirits. I take it to mean that he's mostly recovered and that the US concert tour is still on track. Huzzah!! (*fingers crossed**knocks on wood*)

Also saw the news about his new album last near making the top 11 of IFPI (Billboard?) list. Which...uh...I have no idea what it is, but from reading posts about it, seems to be a fairly authoritative global sales chart for music albums or something. So yay?

In other news, the 3.1 patch for Honkai: Star Rail will be coming out next week. So we'll see how the story goes. Though, I forsee probably taking longer to complete it since I'll be away at Vegas the weekend following its release (*yay*).

I hadn't planned on pulling the banners for 3.1, but after the banner details came out, I will probably pull a bit on the Tribbie banner. Mostly because it's got 4 star Guinaifen on it, and that's one of the few 4 stars which I do sometimes use but do not have full E6 yet. I am hoping to be able to push her to at least E4 if not E6. Also, Tribbie I hear plays well with Castorice, which is coming up in patch 3.3 and I am planning to pull. We'll see how my luck runs on if I also manage to pull Tribbie while I'm at it...

Otherwise, I still want to save up for patch 3.2, which is looking to be the major splurge for pulls. It's got Castorice who I'm planning to pull because she looks pretty. Also Anaxa, the Odin expy, who also looks kinda hot, and also is wind AoE, which is a slot I still need to fill. Also, also, I hear rumors that Dr. Ratio will finally be coming up for rerun, and I still do want to pull his lightcone (for its bathtub art :p). So really looking forward to 3.2!!

First of all, the main story mission recordings are available for both CN and EN versions.

I'll put the extreme TLDR at the beginning: I liked this better than Penacony. The story telling is fine. The characters are for the most part fine. Looking forward to more.

That said, let's get down to more details.

The good news is I have tickets to the Las Vegas concert on Sat! Will be meeting up with a cousin and her friend there and attending together.

I...really, really, really, really, really don't want to think about how much I ended up spending for this event. *lalala~have~amnesiaaa~*

Changing the subject...

So the Star Rail 3.0 patch started earlier this week. I am only about halfway through the story though. It feels longer than the Penacony arcs, and I saw complaints about the length from some, but I think it's fine.

I do like the maps better than Penacony though. Penacony gave me claustrophobia with so many closed in spaces, and the tilting rooms gave me motion sickness. This new planet has more open door areas and wide open spaces, which is more comfortable to look at.

Plot has barely gotten started. Character design is too early to say. I'll probably write a longer review later this weekend.

Oh, I am playing with CN voice and EN subtitles. Though, since many names are Greco-Latin, it seems like EN voice would be more appropriate, but unfortunately, the VA strike is still impacting the game. Especially, Dan Heng is not voiced in the EN version, and he has a lot of lines in this patch. So ah well. I'll see about finding youtube vids for walkthrough/cinematics in the EN version later, if only to hear how the voices of the new characters sound like in EN, and how the various proper names are supposed to be pronounced.

Sunday did indeed join the Astral Express. Supposedly not as a full member, but rather as a passenger of indeterminate length. But given that we only get one new destination per year, we might as well have gained a permanent new passenger. *sigh* -_-

Well, his fangirls are happy, I guess.

Me, I weep for the future where we'll be getting more of his long and dull and pointlessly faux-philosophical dialogue all the freaking time now.

Also, I gotta say, the dude was in jail for all of, like, a month. The IPC just lets him off for...nothing, apparently. Or I guess it's implied Robin made a deal for his release, but we see her looking fine and...well, not unhappy anyway, so said payment couldn't have been all that. And afterwards, he's pretty much wandering around nilly willy on Penacony in the Dreamscape, using his Harmony powers to mind-whammy people so the plebs won't recognize him as a "fugitive" / political outcast from the Family.

Just... Blah. Aventurine was put on death row for killing a single slave master and had to basically sell himself to Jade for his "freedom" (and we're not sure how free he currently is). Dan Heng had to grow up in jail for the crime of his predecessor, who by all legal and cultural rights he shouldn't have to pay for after rebirth.

From what I can see, Sunday, just like the Stellaron Hunters, don't need to pay anything *concrete* for the wrongs they have done, aside from some nebulous "internal struggle" or whatever.

*sigh*

Gameplay-wise, I've tested the Trial version of Sunday in the same team with Jing Yuan. It's definitely does more damage at a faster rate than normal. But... eh. Going to skip him and see if there's alternative Harmony units during 3.x that can also benefit JY.

In 3.0 there's an upcoming Lightning Remembrance character that I'm also going to consider.
tanithryudo: (Dragon)
Just got Aventurine and his LC this patch, which used up all of my saved up jades.

Next patch has Sunday, which I don't exactly like as a character. However, he's like a major specialized buffer for Jing Yuan. So... yeargh.

Wibbling between whether I want to shell out money for him. >_

Zhou Shen's birthday livestream was awesome as ever. We actually got 5 songs of his album. The newest track 《虚构》 is threatening to break into my top 3, lol. Been also wandering around youtube and bilibili for the various Live performances of these tracks so far; here's hoping we get 《虚构》 at this weekend's Chongqing concert rounds. Though, for the most part, I actually prefer the studio versions of these songs over the Live versions. I guess it's because most of them are more suited for listening for details with headphones on.

That said, in my browsing, I did come across a lot of fanworks/remix/covers of these works that are pretty awesome. There are some seriously talented fans (or not even fans, just music lovers) out there.

First of all, here is a remix I saved in my memories folder all the way back when the first track came out. Using track 1's 《蜃楼》"Mirage" as BGM for a Wandering Earth 2 MV. The lyrics work really well with the digital life plot thread in the Wandering Earth series, and the editing is seamless. It also got a comment from the director of Wandering Earth in the comments section, so here's hoping Zhou Shen will get to collab with WE3 when it comes out.
Link: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1Q1421U7Ah/

Being the oldest track out, this song also has several remixes with Honkai Star Rail. Of these, the first one is a slightly better quality edit IMO.
There's also a pure a capella cover which I found to be really well done.

Also from my saved folder is this half cover/half remix of 《Wala Li Longla》 and "Despicable Me". It feels... so very fitting. XDXDXD
Link: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1vFiMeaEaP/

There's also a remix of this song and Harry Potter.

Speaking of Star Rail, there's one more crossover, an Aventurine-centric remix with《警报》 which I thought was very well edited.
Link: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1gD421V7Uj/

Furthermore...
There is a content creator who has several songs which are a mashup of Zhou Shen's and another artists, and the latest one is 《重启》crossed over with Taylor Swift's "Fortnight". Second in the same playlist is another mashup with 《少管我》 and disco.
Then, 《记忆商店》has a few remixes, with 【自杀专卖店】 and 【漫长的季节】.
After that, 《嗨》 actually had a really hilarious short video as BGM for Yunnan mushrooms on weibo. Alas, the original clip is gone and I haven't been able to find copies of it anywhere. Aside from that, there's also a really awesome cover in French, by a French fan.
Next, we have 《缝合》× 【三悦群像】, though the editing isn't as good as the other ones above.
After that, 《空壳》doesn't actually have any remixes. I expect the last song 《虚构》 to be the same, as these two songs are very very much a gift/dialogue between the artist and his fans. So there's not a lot of room to remix it into other contexts.
Anyways, next in the list is 《没关系》, which has a remix with Disney's "Soul". Unfortunately, the editing isn't all that great. Just including it for completionism's sake.
Finally, 《请我不改》 has a remix with Black Myth Wukong, which is decently edited. There's also a short remix with the military that made me lol.

Finally, returning to the topic of fanworks, here's one more that's unrelated to the album. It's a rewriting of the lyrics to 《北京欢迎你》 to celebrate his concert at the Bird's Nest. A lot of memes and in-jokes that I suppose only fans would get. The idea behind it is quite moving.

So Ratio x Aventurine is the ship I've been following after mostly giving up on the JYxDH ship.

There's more fics in this ship, so naturally there's also a larger number of badfic along with the ok-fic and good-fic. It still means I have to slog through a lot of the badfic, even after automatically filtering the ones that are recognizably bad from the title/summary/tags before even clicking in (I mean, WTF does ice skater AU make any sort of sense? Or there's the genderflip/trans AUs..)

Still, I still get to actually read a lot of badfic before closing them out. Or even decent fic that is ok in some parts while still driving me nuts in others. So while this is on my mind, I might as well also get it off my chest...

Finally finished both the main Hoolay storyline, and the subsequent Wardance event quest. Jotting down some first impressions...

The storytelling I think is pretty stable and in line with the quality of the other 2.x chapters. That is, nothing egregrious stood out while playing, and the progression from segment to segment flowed ok. Focus characters of the patch got their moments to shine. The most obvious whys and wherefores were covered for. So, it was pretty good, IMO.

It's a short and straightforward story. We're shown the stuff happening, even where our protagonists are not present. So none of that mysterious speaking in riddles stuff that may or may not pay off shtick from Luofu 1.x or Penacony arcs.

The general online response I've seen so far (aside from the obvious haters and nitpickers), have generally been positive too. The only criticism I've seen from both the EN and CN side is that it's illogical for Jiaoqiu to have come out of the whole thing alive and "merely" blind.

I have to wonder if originally they meant for Jiaoqiu to be a 4 star character and die during this story. But when he became a 5 star, they had to write him to survive. (Because having a limited banner char who gets killed off, and thus no further appearances in future stories, after the banner ends would probably cause the people who pulled him for the design/backstory to riot.)

Now, it's obviously not a great piece of literature or anything like that. And if you want to nitpick, there are a lot of problems that can be found. But then, that could be said about any and all of HSR's stories.

Especially, the details that interact with the worldbuilding and setting setup, especially for what appears to be a complex "work-in-progress" as the Xianzhou Alliance, is an obvious problem area. I am still no clearer as to how the various government departments/factions/titles interact. Huaiyan seems to imply that Jing Yuan does have some sort of "command" over the 6 charioteer departments. But 6 divisions imply that Cloud Knight is one of them, so I guess he's referring to the Arbiter-General position being above them? But then he also seems to imply that this role can also be temporarily handed off to another Arbiter-General, as he was sitting in for Jing Yuan in that role while the 3 generals were splitting their work. Isn't this like the equivalent making the head of state of another kingdom your imperial regent? Bwah?

And then there's the whole stuff with Vidyadhara and Preceptor Taoran. Mentioned that stuff in the comment here.

What I didn't like about the main story is actually the constant switching of POV characters. It was fine in Penacony, because it only happened a few times. But here, it seemed like we're constantly switching POV, and then doing just a few fights, and then switching again. It's annoying, because each time it replaces the first slot of my team, and then I have to change the rest of my team setup. This also results in me losing any technique buffs I had up previously, which leads to using up a lot of technique point consumables. I mean, sure, it's not like I ever run low on this... but it just feels annoying after a while.

Like, I can get behind the fact that it's a good mechanism to let people try out new banner characters in overworld combat. But there's only 2 characters you need to do that for: Feixiao and Lingsha. There's absolutely no reason to force us to slot Yanqing, Yunli, or Jiaoqiu in the team, considering the former sucks and the latter two aren't up to be pulled. -_-

That said, playing Lingsha has confirmed my initial plans not to pull for her (not that I will have the tickets to pull for her next banner). She seems only good for superbreak teams with Firefly (which I don't have). As a generic healer, she can't even match my ancient 1.x Luocha.

Feixiao, OTOH, is pretty nice as a DPS. She's going to be the one I concentrate on building next.

Eh... back to story. The Wardance event story I feel dragged on, even though I think it is probably the same length as March's training event. Most likely the reason I feel this is because... who the fuck cares about Luca? I mean, out of all the Belobog characters, he's probably at the bottom of the list of recognizable names. He doesn't even show up in the main Belobog story, just one side quest. So why is he getting a whole event that might as well be Luca Companion Quest v2? >_<

Yes, I get that his backstory as a fighting ring guy fits with the whole martial arts tournament setup of the Wardance. Yes, I get that Hoyo is trying to tell the story of the ultimate underdog climbing their way up the ranks, and it's hard to cast someone like Seele or Gepard as that much of an underdog competitor, even if they are a whole lot more popular as characters that people likely prefer to see. But. But. Why do you chose now of all times to use logic rather than marketing statistics?

There are a few parts of the Wardance story that I liked. The bit featuring the Caretwheel Temple. The appearance by Mr. Tails. Even the somewhat friendly/antagonistic relationship with Topaz. Just...not the main part with Luca.

And, like, I get the obvious Olympic memes and stuff in the Wardance. Hoyo overplaying with memes is nothing new. BTW, reading CN player responses to the story... it seems like people are drawing ties with the early day CN participation in the Olympics? Em. Have to wonder if that was what Hoyo was trying to get players to emphasize with? I mean, CN is currently contender for #1 spot in the Olympics. Yes there is discrimination, with regards to drug tests and stuff. But it's really hard to say CN is still the underdog. Do people still see themselves as such? Honestly curious.

Anyways, regarding the tie in between Belobog and the Xianzhou... I realize this was probably set up from the inception, since the coincidence of both places having major crisis events around 700 years ago is too much to be coincidence from a narrative point of view. But, it still gives me the feeling of "what a small world we move in". Though, honestly, I guess I should've been used to this, considering how much a lot of characters get reused all over the place to save designing new NPCs. (Poor Argenti, the brick that keeps getting shoved everywhere that needs a deux ex machina.)

Along with that, specifically regarding Jing Yuan, I feel like the poor guy has been relegated to background exposition tool for the whole update. Yes, this is because this patch is specifically meant to sell Feixiao, and thus she needs to have the limelight, and thus the other two generals, as her only equals, thus must be far from the limelight...

His part in the main story, is understandable, since he is the only one who can give a lot of the backstory and politics on what happened with Hoolay's original capture and incarceration. But at the end of the Wardance event, where he talks about his buddy the ancient hero from Belobog is... eh. Feels a bit shoved in there.

(Also, I want to make a note here. There's nothing in the story that states Igor whatsisname is Luca's ancestor. Jing Yuan used the term "descendant/后代" once, and clearly he's referring to a very general, generational inheritance sense. There's nothing that confirms an actual biological relationship with Luca. They just look similar and both just happen have a bionic arm.)

Anyway, 2.5 ended with us supposedly leaving the Luofu. But earlier in the main story cutscenes, it showed that Ruan Mei had arrived with Tingyun. I am not sure if 2.6 will involve flash backs to what happened there with our protagonist involved. Or if it's going to be just POV change of stuff that happened without our protagonists present. Or maybe we'll come back for them in 2.7?

The limited banner for 2.6 is confirmed to be Rappa, and the setting Penacony. The banners for 2.7 are most likely going to be Sunday and Tingyun (unknown in which order).

Personally, I am waiting for Aventurine to come up for reruns. As well as Dr. Ratio, because I want to get his lightcone. Whether or not I will have enough pulls by then... eh. We'll see.
tanithryudo: (Dragon)
The official release info for the next patch is starting to come in. Today was the livestream, and in the next few days we should be getting PVs for Feixiao. (Will update this post as they show up.)

Currently relevant are the upcoming banners:
- First half is Feixiao + the trio of Kafka, Black Swan, Robin
- Second half is Lingsha + Topaz

Poor Ratio got skipped. Fingers crossed that he comes up together with Aventurine in 2.6 patch.

Kafka is the first character to have a 2nd rerun, skipping Seele, Jing Yuan, Luocha who came before her. Topaz is the fastest character to have a 2nd rerun... she just had her first rerun two patches ago. -_-

My current plans are to pull for Feixiao and Robin. Then Feixiao's LC. We'll see if I am lucky enough to get all of these with the pulls I have saved up. *fingers crossed*

Not much info in the short trailer we got. But it does seem like we've got Vidyadhara preceptors showing up as villains and taking credit for Hoolay's jailbreak. (BTW, huge difference between the CN and EN livestream, since I guess the EN VA for Feixiao couldn't make it, so her character was replaced by Guinaifen in the EN version.)

New map is a refurbished Xianzhou battleship now serving as the martial arts tournament set.

Ooh, fans pointed out that the villainous Preceptor Taoran is the same dude that talked to the journalist in the previous Dragons PV. Hm. He looks and sounds younger in the current trailer than in the PV (different VA too)...but if he had rebirthed in between, he shouldn't be using the same name still. Also, what's up with the horns?
Suspicious... )
Found another lore fragment mentioning Taoran. He definitely seems to be a contemporary of Dan Feng. Doesn't seem to be a proponent of the Preceptor council seizing power permanently from the High Elder position though. At least at the time.

Got linked to some stuff from the Cosmodyssey event from long ago. Admittedly, I played through that thing without looking at any of the text (just focused on the numbers, lol). So all of this stuff is "new" to me.

This event came in the 2.1 patch, which was the Acheron/Aventurine banners, and the storyline up to the point where Aventurine got himself whacked by Acheron, and before the protagonists learned the full truth behind Penacony.

However, the Cosmodyssey encounters already had stuff about Yunli

Anyway, the original point of my looking up that event was for the encounter with Aventurine where he spends at least 58 trillion credits at the auction house.

Now looking at the bounties that the IPC has on the Stellaron Hunters... Kafka was worth 10.8999 billion credits, Blade worth 8.13 billion, Silver Wolf 5.1 billion, Firefly 9.723 billion. In retrospect, this doesn't seem like it's that much considering that the amount Aventurine spent is probably not considered a lot to him.

Of course, it's probably also why none of the IPC characters who showed up for the Penacony chapter bothered to even make note of Firefly despite her wanted status. To the likes of Aventurine, Topaz, and their boss Jade, the bounty for her is like chump change and not worth the hassle involved.

As an aside, I just looked at my account, and I currently have around 14 million credits. I would estimate that with minimal spending and no special events, I might make around 1 million per week. Building a character from level 0 up to max would take maybe...5 mil or so (not accounting for the gains from farming mats/EQ)? In that respect, a couple billion is worth a lot to the average player (not that we'd ever get the option to turn them in for that bounty, lol).

I saw some players joking about credits powercreep in the game. But honestly, Boothill was conceived for 2.x and his bounty is only 1 billion. So it doesn't seem like there's any inflation going on with the lore.

Finally, this cute little comic fic is relevant here.

On an entirely different topic, fandom really cracks me up. Some fan actually made a mock website for Dr. Ratio's university... https://veritasprime.pages.cc/

And then there's stuff like this. WTF CN?

Finally able to complete the endgame: Forgotten Hall level 12 and Pure Fiction 4. Haven't done Apocalyptic Shadow 4 yet since the time limit for that will roll over to the next monthly battlepass track, and I am considering saving it for then, but I don't forsee any issues with passing that either, since the current AP bosses are fairly easy/straightforward according to all sources.

With Forgotten Hall, I initially tried Himeko + Topaz on team 1. But it seems like the superbreak pair of Ruan Mei and Harmony MC is better used together with the break-weak boss on this level. And that leaves only 1 DPS slot, in which case, Himeko is weaker than Jing Yuan (didn't consider Topaz as she's more sub-DPS and also non-AoE). Also, their follow up attacks trigger about the same amount of times in the fight, and thus trigger about the same amount of dungeon bonus.

With team 2, Clara + Bronya make for a great duo on my account, since I have Clara built for all damage and no speed, whereas Bronya has decent speed (currently 152 and still trying for 160) and can pull Clara along. Topaz is there as SP-positive subDPS to focus on the main boss, and help trigger the dungeon bonus. Luocha as it turns out can sustain the team just fine (as long as no one gets one-shot) and half the load for debuff clearing is picked up by Bronya anyways, who's keeping Clara in the clear.

For Pure Fiction, I actually got really close to the pass threshold with the same team, but slightly less built Hanya. Turns out I just needed to raise her to to level 80, fill in her last trait with +8% ATK, and swap her lightcone for Bronya's. Not too much which of these made the main difference... the added traits, or the change in LC, since the better LC also allowed her to generate more SP, which could be critical for a team with a SP-hungry DPS such as DHIL.

Anyway, having Hanya working so well makes me less inclined to pull for the Sparkle rerun banner coming up next with Jiaoqiu. Even if she's touted as DHIL's best support due to providing SP and speed. I mean, she's essentially a Hanya-plus. But if Hanya works ok for endgame content, and I don't have a non-gameplay preference for Sparkle's character, I don't feel there's a need to pull.

Speaking of pulls, the current rumors for the 2.5 patch (the one with the story update after Jiaoqiu's banner coming up next) is that the first half will be Feixiao plus a trio 5* rerun of Robin + Kafka + Black Swan. Then second half will be Lingsha + Dr Ratio.

My current plans are to get Feixiao + her LC (because most Hunt LC I have suck). Then Dr. Ratio's LC for the pretty. Also considering on getting Robin and maybe her E1 (but not LC because there's lots of great free Harmony LCs), because she's the best/most hyped support right now. Will see how my luck goes with pulls, and whether we get news of when Aventurine rerun occurs.

Addendum: Newest rumors say that Lingsha's banner will rerun with Topaz instead of Dr. Ratio. Not sure how reliable this is, since Topaz just had a first rerun recently, and it seems weird she'd be the first character to rerun twice ahead of so many others. On the other hand, she's touted as best support DPS for Feixiao, so they might be trying to boost sales by bringing her up again. On the third hand, testers have also claimed that the Hunt-March and the new 4 star Moze on the Feixiao banner are also great supports for her, so it's not like Topaz is a must have on her team. On the fourth hand, if Ratio is kept back, then he'll likely show up along with Aventurine's rerun, which is a cute arrangement if so. Anyways... I guess we'll wait and see. All is fine as long as they're not rerunning Aventurine immediately, cuz that would really be a crunch on my jades.

So far, here's my score for the current endgame MoC dungeon, and the results from the last version which just finished when the patch rolled over. Comparing the two, overall cycles have decreased for the same level, so I guess my overall char-builds & team-building have improved.

Also, for the current run, I actually did better for lvl 12 than lvl 11! And 13 cycles is just 3 away from getting all 3 stars (and if I get 3 stars on lvl 12, it will automatically give me the missing stars on lvl 11). So, that's something to work towards...

MoC results )

Next, a couple more "graduated" characters. They're at a stage where their gear and stats are good enough that it's not worth it for me to specifically grind for more.

Of these, Luocha and Fu Xuan are my earliest 5 star sustains, so they've helped me through a lot of tough content. Although Luocha has been severely powercrept by later healers, I can still get by with him, so I haven't pulled for any other 5 star healers (and currently not planning to pull for Lingsha either). Fu Xuan is also not quite fitting the current meta (which is headed in the way of lots high speed mobs). I do plan to pull Aventurine when his rerun comes around, but that's more for the slash factor. :p

Ruan Mei is definitely a linchpin of the current Break meta, and I don't regret pulling her light cone and E1. Tingyun is one of the best 4 stars in the game and has managed to remain relevant all the way since game launch, which is a pretty incredible feat.

Luocha, Fu Xuan, Ruan Mei, Ting Yun )

As to my currently focused works in progress...

Generally looking to build March up in time to be Fei Xiao's support DPS. There's about a month to go for that, so plenty of time to level the traces and finalize the gear. Her speed is already pretty high, so looking to get some appropriate Firmament set of belt ornaments for her. Once I have her built, I can have the protagonist trio viably on the same team for exploration of the new map! XD

I am still looking to get the Harmony!MC speed to 145 to meet the reqs of her belt ornaments (she's at 144 speed right now >_<)

Jingliu is...almost done? Will need to finish leveling her belt ornaments to max and see if the stats are ok or need any adjusting. But not sure if I want to continue farming EQ pieces for her since my luck on that set is awful.

Asta is at 159 speed, just 1 short of the 160 breakpoint, and that number is driving me nuts. =P Will be on the looking for more speed on her.

Levelling wise, was originally planning to ascend Dr. Ratio to 80 next. But since there's been no leaks on when Aventurine's rerun will be, and the upcoming bosses next patch are not quite friendly to him, I might hold off until his other half comes around. In that case, I will probably level Argenti next, since upcoming bosses are more likely to be weak to physical (due to pushing Yunli banner), and might switch over to farming physical damage gear.

Finally, looking into switching Gallagher from Messenger + Passenger gear to Messenger + break dmg (either Watchmaker or Thief) gear. Especially if I can find a way to push his speed to 160 as well (he's currently at 152). Though since this will require swapping/farming multiple sets, it's gonna be lower in priority.

The Good: The storytelling has improved. It's like they took all the feedback players had against the old 1.0-1.3 patches to heart, and learned from them to make the Penacony and now the new Xianzhou update. The storytelling is tight, with the relevant information directly presented to us instead of hidden in separate side quests or readables/item descriptions.

The political tension lurking beneath the surface of the Xianzhou is also well done, laid out clear enough for us to get the basics of, but still leaving room for complexity as if we're just looking at the tip of the iceberg. The fact that the upcoming crisis we're gonna deal with appears to be a xanatos gambit/conspiracy mashup from at least 3 factions (or more?) gives a good sense of suspense (at least for me), and balances out the fact that 3 arbiter generals + protagonist party which really takes the suspense out of any direct combat scenario (we've curb-stomped grander boss-fights).

Also, I hear the new Hunt-class March 7 is pretty buff, and has at least 2 ways she can be built, as either normal sub-DPS or in a break build. That's pretty awesome, and I am looking forward to slowly building mine (probably as sub-DPS since I have more leftover gear for that build).

The two major side quests that came with the patch was also well done. The story behind March's sword training is hilarious: Skott of the IPC is...well, hard to put into words to describe him, but definitely hilarious for the player. The companion quest for Yunli was quite moving, though not for anything related to Yunli, but the story told by the magic sword was well told and a gold mine of lore info.

The Meh: The characterization we've seen of Yunli so far does not make me want to pull for her. I don't feel she's outright bratty as some haters see her on various forums, but she's definitely... a kid. Like, the way she thinks and acts is immature and what I would expect of a kid. Which is fine, and IC. But... I don't play this game to raise kids. So.

Also, I am conflicted about Yanqing. The characterization in the story is pretty good, and he's clearly matured since we saw in the 1.2 patch. We see the officer side of him who has learned to reign in his temper and deal with politics and diplomacy. But... He still sucks for gameplay, and I ended up pulling his 3rd eidolon from the standard banner, when any other character would've been strictly better. -_- *sigh*

Undecided: Feixiao looks fine and her characterization is ok, but doesn't blow me out of the water or anything. She is a wind element main-DPS to fill the hole in my teams...but I hear mixed reviews of her kit online. Some say she's great, some say she sucks, some say you have to get E2 be decent... I dunno. It's possible her kit hasn't even been finalized yet, so I can wait and see.

Ling Sha's visual design looked really nice on the preview art, but in character, she looks...like a clone of Sparkle with a neater haircut. Also reminds me of Yuuko from xxxHolic. I dunno, will hold off until I learn more about her kit and how her bunny pet will show up in combat before making any pull plans.

The Bad: The updated killed any inclinations I had of pulling Jiaoqiu in the second half of the banner. Just... this dude has nothing resembling Zhuge Liang except for his fan. His characterization is barely above that of a NPC and his attitude... eh. Doesn't feel like he's got the "excellence" to be a 5 star, honestly.

His fellow emissary from the Yaoqing, Moze, is somewhat similar. Though at least this guy is only a 4 star. I don't see what people like about this guy though, since his performance in the story so far is...somewhat lacking. Talks big but doesn't really back any of it up. I'm thinking it's more due to the design being from Impact 3rd?

Addendum: Misc stuff

Found this post which shows proof that less than 5 months passed between the Stellaron Crisis on the Luofu, and the start of this patch (Lingsha just recently arrived).

We also know that the main quest of Penacony took place within 48 hours. In other words, our various filler missions and side quests in between chapters took up the majority of time, looks like. =P

There have always been discussions and arguments surrounding the fact that the gameplay "Classes" (I'll use this term to distinguish it from the lore "Paths") of many characters don't match their philosophical/political backstory. Before, most people reached the conclusion that Hoyo makes an effort to design characters into appropriate classes, but due to gameplay design, that isn't always possible, and so there will be some characters who get placed into inappropriate classes.

I mean, the most obvious support for this is the fact that there are a lot more Paths than there are playable Classes. Our protagonist team all follow the Path of the Trailblaze according to in-game dialogue, but there's no Trailblaze class. The Stellaron Hunters, as we've learned recently, follow the Path of Finality. Argenti is an ardent follower of Beauty. Black Swan is an agent of Remembrance. And so on and so forth... these are all Paths which don't have corresponding Classes, so obviously, the characters need to be sorted elsewhere.

But more recently, with the Divergent Universe: The Human Comedy update, a different consensus has emerged:

If a Path is a concept, a divine portfolio in the Greek Myth kind of way, then only the Aeons can be completely pure of purpose enough to tread solely on a particular Path. They moment they are no longer purely of that Path, they fall from the position of Aeon (which is sorta/partly what happened to Tayzzyronth the Propagation).

All other living beings, however, have varying levels of free will and thus can be a messy conglomeration of multiple Paths. Though most common mortals don't walk any particular Path will enough "force", if you will, to amount to anything. To become a Pathstrider, you need to have some sort of focus on a particular Path above others, but even then, it is very much possible to be a Pathstrider of multiple Paths. Hell, Phantylia even proved that is possible to mainline more than one path as an Emanator.

The Divergent Universe even gives us a bunch of examples in what combinations of Paths could result in! Though, it's still limited by gameplay to combinations of two Paths. But we do see in our player character the possibilities of further combinations, given that our MC is technically powered by the Paths of Trailblaze/Destruction/Preservation/Harmony, with likely a lot more to come in the future.

So I've been doing some reading on this pairing (理砂 in CN). Both because it's much more prolific than JYxDH... and because surprisingly the stories I've read so far are surprisingly of a more healthy relationship (though it may be me being lucky so far). And this is despite Aventurine having the more in-your-face sob story background.

I guess it's because to write JY pairings well, you have to go into CN societial mores and even feudal culture. That's a tall order for most writers who are in it for the fluff & kinks, apparently. So more than half the time, you end up with AU or semi-AU/OOC works which might as well have nothing to do with Star Rail, and they just slap the familiar names in to have give the OCs a face.

Ratio & Aventurine, on the other hand, their relationship resides in a very much modern day academic/work context, which is easier to write, I guess, and thus not as much reason to go all whacky AU/OOC.

I am considering pulling for Aventurine when his rerun comes around... I already have Ratio, though not built (because I have a great Imaginary attacker already in DHIL so it's not high up on priorities).

BTW, found this "translation" of their in game dialogue. No matter how you look at it, Aventurine and Ratio must've had a long time partnership from before the Penacony mission. They read each other quite well, and actually trust each other a lot for all they can put on a convincing act of mutual distrust.

“几块石头罢了”(基石不止一个)
“所以你的办法是什么”(计划)
“没必要说的太清楚”(将计就计)
“合作的重点是互相信任”(谁来干)
“所以你信任我吗?”(你主导)
“这取决于你的态度”(我怎么做)
“所以你也不信任我,这不就行了”(背刺我)

New map: Shackling Prison. New enemy type: Borisin.

At least 3 Xianzhou ships participating: Luofu, Zhuming, Yaoqing. There will be in 3 Arbiter Generals in attendance.

Officially, the purpose of the tournament is for morale, but there's also hints of political and other issues going on the background. There's gonna be (no longer) surprise attacks of course. Also, the Sword Champion title isn't up as the prize.

March is learning swordsmanship under Yunli (representing Zhuming). Jing Yuan seems to be trying to matchmake Yanqing and Yunli, lol. (Yunli's sword looks a lot like Dusk from GW2, heh.)

Jiaoqiu likes spicy food, but Yunli can't seem to handle the spice. Jing Yuan likes coriander, though Jiaoqiu can't stand it.

Chinese version. Note, the CN version seems to be mainly with the VA's as the VAs after the initial trailer, while the Eng version seems to have all the VAs mostly in character for the full clip.

Based on feedback of Jiaoqiu's current kit...yeah, probably not going to pull for him.
I mean, his lore is healer but they make him pure DoT/debuff in gameplay and removed the healing/debuff part of his kit, just...eh. Not sure if I want to pull for Sparkle instead (+ Guinaifen), since it would be nice to have her but maybe not a must-have.

BTW, the likely end boss of the patch, from the trailer, is likely the Borisin former leader Hoolay. (IIRC the Borisins might be based on the Mongols?) Read more... )
