Detective Conan

Is there someplace I can download the series and read it on my harddrive instead of online? My connection gets progressively worse later at night and it gets to be a pain to wait a minute for every page to load.

Also, I've been browsing some Detective Conan sites and I get the sense that most people consider Kaito Kid as a native character of the DC series. (I guess his own series is not very well known?) Supposedly he's also ranked #1 in character polls for DC in Japan, which was kind of weird. (Shinichi and Conan were #2 and #3 respectively, despite being the same character, sort of.) I guess that's why there's so much of him in DC fics...

Edit 1: I don't get ConanxAi, or at least the reasons for it... is there something more on this from the anime?

Well, the ConanxAi thing is pretty obvious to me, since Haibara is always making snarky comments towards Shin'ichi and teases him a lot regarding his relationship and not!relationship with Ran and Ayumi respectively. Shin'ichixHeiji to me is more due to Heiji being one of the few people who can actually shake up Shin'ichi a bit when he's working against him and they share a pretty unique level of understanding that he doesn't have with other people in his life; mostly due to Heiji being the only other high schooler detective geek. (And also, they swap clothing a lot, so it's quite cute and amusing, especially when their girlfriends are all "hey, you look hot in my boyfriend's clothes". So, yeah.)

Actually, I like Ran for being a kick ass girl when she's threatened, but still being allowed to have her girly moments. It's nice to see that a girl doesn't have to be either buff, overly self reliant (she's still in high school), or a bitch to be able to defend herself. And you have to remember that despite seemingly getting herself into a shit ton of murder mysteries, she's really not used to seeing dead people, no matter how much we the readers are inured to the constant deaths. She's supposed to be a normal student with a normal life and a MIA boyfriend. If anything, it's really more the fact that these characters are stuck in stasis that's messing with characterization than Ran's character, but that's going into a meta analysis I don't have time for right now.

Took a quick look at the fic, mistook it for some other fic at first, but then realized my mistake. Liked the other "character study" fic I read better. The fic you linked just sounded horribly pretentious narration-wise. Unless that's the point. Hell, I don't even know who the notes are for, an original character or if this is meant as some ill-disguised meta, in which case, um, wat? (If you want my opinion of the characters, I can make a separate post, because it's gonna get long.)

Also, guess it's a taste difference, but I'm actually in the series for the non-Black Org filler arcs, since I find the meta arc quite tedious. Eh, maybe it's some weird backlash left over from X-File days, when the meta arcs grew too big to be self sustaining and it was the MotWs that kept things fresh and interesting.

Ai - eh... I don't really get a romantic sense out of her teasing of Conan. It seems more on the order of how Sonoko teases Ran, or even how we tease each other about stuff over the phone. It's just a girly thing to do with people they're close to, and Conan is the only person that Ai can identify with. I get the sense that Ai feels comfortable among the detective boys enough to tease the others, and especially Conan more in private over the stuff that the other kids can't know about. When there is danger, she looks to Conan as a support/protector (even unconsciously). But she's old enough (real time wise) not to confuse any of that with romantic feelings. So I don't really get a lot of romantic vibes off her for Conan. I dunno... maybe I'm missing something or the message is carried across differently in the anime.

Heiji - Sure, they're great best buds... I just again don't get a lot of romantic/slashy vibes off of them for each other... *shrug*

Ran - I like Ran in the chapters that have development for her. Otherwise it seems she gets stuck back into stasis and the prior development is lost until the next character development point.

Fic - That wasn't a fanfic actually. The author typed up their psych 1 homework and uploaded to ffnet or something What is the "other character study" fic you read?

Ai - Either you see it or you don't. Quite frankly, whatever, I'm not exactly gung-ho about people seeing it my way. I see Ai as having a small crush on Conan, but also knowing realistically it's not going anywhere, so she might as well enjoy it in private type of thing.

Heiji - Again, like Ai, either you see it or you don't. Apparently, fandom agrees with the "don't" almost 100%. It's nearly impossible to find any Shin'ichi/Heiji slash at all. Rule 34 lied!

Ran - To be fair, all the characters other than Conan/Shin'ichi get this treatment, so it's not like she's being singled out for this.
