YvtW: Brainstorm
Jan. 4th, 2004 09:22 amOkay, I need to take care of some things on both sides. So I'm just gonna jot down some of the ideas that have been free floating around my head all this time.
On the much-languished side with the Search for Locke (:p), I need to get us out of Helheim, since we're kinda stuck there, both in the story and in terms of writer's block. Now, my current thought is to (somehow) have us end up in an afterlife world where we can easily get to other afterlife realms and then come back... so sort of like a hub in the after-life highway. A couple of ideas for that would be:
1) Purgatory from the Incarnations of Immortality series - I haven't read this series for a good long time now, but I don't think we'll require too much knowledge to carry through if we just stick around in Purgatory. The good thing about it is that Purgatory, iirc, is computerized (and beaucratized :p) so it'll be easier to access information that we might need. The other thing about the IoI world is that I'd like to have a interaction scene with Perry (Inc. of Evil), even though it'd be a devil to write (pun intended :p).
2) Sunless lands from mainstream DCU - Well, Yeoman said that Didi was CBY's patron for their little adventure, so that could be enough of a tie-in to allow us to use that particular realm for a central hub. The good thing about that is that since virtually nothing is known about the Sunless lands themselves, I can make anything up and it wouldn't be "wrong". :D And instead of computerized access, it'd be just a simple switch to mystical/cosmic info source.
3) Heaven/Yggdrasil from OMG - The advantage of this choice is that the OMG Heaven is tied to the Yggdrasil computer system, which is also another version of Norse mythology. So it's less of a jump for us to get from the MU Helheim to the OMG afterlife. The computerized Ygg also allows for the same info we'd get from Purgatory, and there's a precedence of the OMG Norns helping me out.
But to get to those goals in the first place, we have to finish up in Helheim, and I have no idea how to write the MU Hela... so I guess she'll just have to be a little OOC.
Actually... now that I think about it (as I write)... it might work out if she never shows up. After all, from her POV, she'd think that Helheim would be impossible for us to get out of without her permission (which is certainly true of the Mythological Helheim, as in Balder's case). And since she'd be trying to keep us from finding Locke (because of certain familial tie-ins with part of the cause of his death - but not disappearance), AND since she might not want to kill us directly since quite a few of us got powerful patrons/friends who might come knocking if she does, the easiest thing for her to do would be to ignore us and just hope we'd remain stuck in there.
Hrm... that might actually work out best, since then I wouldn't have to write for her. Meanwhile, we'll probably decide on trying to take the same way out of Helheim as Mg's mirror did when Meddler sent him there... trying to scale Yggdrasil. We might get some of the info to help us out from the squirrel (whathisname?) on Ygg... who's supposed to be a big gossip.
Did Mr. Grimm have any contact with the squirrel? I might need to check with Mg. If so, I guess we can rationalize the differences in the encounters in that the squirrel doesn't speak English (or any modern Earth-tongues) and Mr. Grimm didn't bother to use telepathy/mental spells... or if it speaks animal-speak, then at least some of our party (the half-elven in particular) who may still be able to communicate.
I'll just need to figure out just what info we'll need to get. Though I suppose I can get away with glossing over it and only mention it in passing later on when we actually act on or talk about the encounter...
So that still leaves how to get from Helheim to... wherever... Some possibilities:
1) We can get attacked by whichever dragon it was that gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil and get rescued by either Didi (or CBY with patronage from her) or by one or more of the Norns from OMG. That would work for either the Sunless lands case or the OMG case up above.
2) We drop go there either via Asgard or Alfheim. Which means we'll be spending a lot of time off-screen just climbing... I suppose that would work to establish the fact that time is passing more quickly for us in the afterlife than on the other side, which is a minor plot point that I wanted for a separate purpose outside of the current arcs.
Meanwhile, Mg wants to continue his side of the storyarc on Middle-earth... which means I probably should have something in place in case he goes nutso and tries to kill everyone. I certainly do *not* want at least the major characters there to be killed off.
However, I also don't want the Andromeda to have been in orbit around ME all this time either, despite my concerns about Mg. After all, Rune was supposed to have done some investigation on Locke's death from her side of things, and certain (temporary) members of the crew did sign on to have some sort of an adventure (Boromir, Bilbo). So I need to get them out for a bit... and it's not like the ME isn't a skip and a hop away either by the Andromeda's own d-hop drives or by Rune's powers.
Since Locke's death has ties to the MU/Helheim, then obviously, the investigation should end up there. Rune isn't a detective, and I don't want to use Daneel Olivaw since 1) he's more of a technological detective and 2) he's already in charge of security in a different area...
So I need another detective to justify Rune going over to the MU. Advice over AIM from Jack is that I should use Bigby Wolf from Fables... and I guess that works for me. Mystically/magically inclined... wouldn't have any probs working with muliple dimensions... the tech angle is minimal... yeah, that'd work.
So my current thought is to have a scene with Rune just finishing up her trip to the MU. Since Hela obviously didn't tell Thor about our arrival in Helheim, and I guess if we do head up to Asgard, it'll be timed so that we arrive after (just after?) Rune leaves, she won't have too much concrete info before she'll have to head back to ME because of possible problems that might arise there.
I think that due to whatever hiding/shielding effect that Llewella put on us before we went into the afterlife realms would also hide us from Rune's clairsentience, which should be reason enough that she doesn't foresee our entry to Asgard (if we go that route). The FBH clones and possibly CBY wouldn't have that protection, iirc, which is a possible explanation of how Hela had diverted us to her version of Helheim instead of the mythological version. Of course, once (if) we arrive in Asgard, the news of the additions to our group would eventually find its way to the Andromeda, and Rune might be able to track us again by the other members among us... but that's all pretty peripheral.
I've got a rough ideas of some of the other realms we'll need to visit after we get past the current hurdle, as well as the order in which we ought to visit them in. But that's still a long ways away from the current state of affairs. I'll worry about them later.
