Movies talk
Mar. 8th, 2004 10:43 amDad brought home a copy of Master and Commander (English with Chinese subtitles), which I watched last night. I rather liked it, though it's not like a favorite or anything. I might watch it again, since a lot of the details went over my head the first time, what with the jargon and the accents and my general historical ignorance. I wonder if there's a crew member named Darwin on that ship... they seem to make a great deal of fuss over the wildlife on the Galapagos Islands. Oh... and I thought the doctor guy was kinda cute... and I dunno if it's because I've been reading quite a few ST:TOS fics lately, but I can't help but be reminded of the Kirk-McCoy dynamic. Maybe it's common for Captains and their Chief Medical Officers to be on a buddy-buddy basis? (Also, I wonder if I check on ffnet, if I would see any slashfics for M&C. :p)
Last Sunday I saw the old Charlie & the Chocolate Factory movie on TV... and there was some discussion about it on the TMI Super Thread going on at Rumbles this last week. The upshot is that all the talk inspired me to drop by the library and check out the book for comparison to the movie; it was elementary school since I read it. Anyways, I think that the movie made Charlie Bucket into a less sympathetic character, hard as that would be to do considering the kid's canon background. I liked the movie's version of Willy Wonka better though; he's more eccentric, weirder, and more in control of things in the movie than the book... that is, he seems less senile *cough* as he comes across in the book.
Also, I liked all the literary quotes that movie Wonka kept dropping. I recognized several from Shakespeare ("Tell me where is fancy bred/in the heart or in the head" and "So shines a good deed in a dark world") and one from the ode by O'Shaunessy ("We are the music makers/And we are the dreamers of dreams"). The song by the Oompa Loompas were rather addictive too; I loved the version that Sandman came up for the TMI thread (note: edited for spelling):
Several Sandmen midgets walk in through a secret passage and take up formation
*Music starts*
Oompa Loompa Dupidy-doo!
I've got another puzzle for you!
Oompa Loompa dupidy-dee!
If you are wise you'll listen to me!
Sandman 1: What do you get when you post on this thread?
Sandman 2: A cramp in the hands and a need for some meds!
Sandman 3: Though it may be fun to treat this just like the sims,
All: Be warned, you may end up...just...like...HIM! *Shows pic of Slayven*
Sandman 1: I don't like the looks of it!!!!
All: Oompa Loompa Dupidy-doo!
If you don't post then you will go far!
Oompa Loompa dupity-dee!
If you are wise you'll listen to me!
*Sandmen exit*
Hee. And I still have this urge to do a corporate takeover or something of Wonka's factory on 2.0 or something...
