Unseen Killer
Stargate Command, May 1996 CE
General Hammond smiled at the five people who stepped out of the whirling light of the stargate, whole and well. Leaning forward, he spoke to them through the control room's microphone.
"SG-4, Dr. Jackson, I take it the trip went well?"
"Boring routine mission, sir," reported Major Mansfield. "Not much to write home about."
Daniel frowned at the rest of SG-4. "Actually," the anthropologist spoke up, "there was quite a bit to write home about."
The major rolled his eyes while the rest of SG-4 looked in bemusement at the civilian scientist.
"I'll admit it was funny when the natives thought we were their Goa'uld gods," said Major Mansfield. "But other than some nice scenery and some nice people, there's nothing of slightest technological interest there."
"But there are things of great cultural value there, General," Daniel protested.
Hammond could tell the archaeologist was just about to launch into a speech about the importance of cultural science in the Stargate Project when suddenly the alarms began to ring out, while the gate spun into motion.
"Unscheduled wormhole activation!"
Daniel and SG-4 barely had time to get out of the way of the incoming rush of gate guards when the stargate opened again and a much bedraggled SG-2 stumbled through the gate.
"Medic!" Captain Lance called out as soon she was across the threshold. She and Lt. Astor were carrying the limp and bloody form of Lt. Frakes between them. Kawalsky had been the last to exit, walking backwards through the gate with his P-90 held up at the ready.
"Close the gate," Hammond ordered the the gate technician, "and call in a medical team." He then leaned forward to speak into the microphone again. "Stand down, people. Medics are on the way."
The gateroom doors opened just then to admit Dr. Fraiser and her team. They quickly had the injured lieutenant on a stretcher.
"What happened, Major?" demanded Janet while the medical team started to cart their patient out of the room.
"Frakes got mauled by some kind of animal," Kawalsky reported, turning around after the iris had closed on the gate. "We were binding up the wound when he suddenly went into seizures--"
As if the words had triggered a switched, Frakes' eyes suddenly popped open and he surged out of the gurney. Daniel, who happened to be one of the closest people to the man, caught him purely out of reflex, and then cried out in alarm when the man clawed and bit at his arm like an animal.
"Hold him down!" Janet ordered.
Two of the gate guards helped the orderlies to hold down the still twitching man while the doctor injected a sedative. Slowly, Frakes' frantic movements tapered off as the man lapsed into unconsciousness.
"Get him back to the infirmary," Janet ordered. "You too," she ordered Daniel, who was cradling his own injured arm. "All of you," she swept her eyes over the assembled SG-2 and SG-4 teams, before hurrying out after the gurney.
"You okay there, Doctor?" Kawalsky asked the archaeologist tiredly.
"I'll live," Daniel replied faintly. "I think. Uh, don't tell Jack."
Kawalsky snorted and escorted the still shell-shocked archaeologist toward the infirmary. He agreed with the sentiment entirely.
Infirmary, a few hours later
"How's Frakes?" Kawalsky was the first to ask when Dr. Fraiser finally emerged from the emergency room.
Janet gave a tired look over the other three members of SG-2. SG-4 and SG-2 had been cleared to leave after the routine post-mission checkup, though the latter remained behind out of concern for their teammate. Daniel had been treated for his wound and asked to remained behind for observation.
"He's finally stable," Janet finally told the concerned team leader of SG-2, "although he seems to be unresponsive for now. We're still trying to identify the cause of the problem though. It hasn't shown up on any of the standard tests so far."
"He's in a coma?" asked Kawalsky, concerned.
"Yes, that's correct--" Janet began when she was cut off by the announcement over the PA system.
"Security to the Mess Hall! Security to the Mess Hall!"
"What in the world?" Lance barely had time to jump out of the way before the door crashed open and a bruised and unconscious Major Mansfield was dragged in by two fellow officers.
"What happened?" Janet demanded, looking critically at the food bits that was all over his uniform.
"I don't know, ma'am," answered one of the lieutenants holding the man. "He and one of the SG-5 marines just suddenly...jumped at each other in the Mess Hall and started fighting."
"You're kidding me?" Daniel asked in disbelief. Having just went on a mission with the laconic leader of SG-4, he would never peg the man as someone who'd get in a fight with another officer.
"Security is still trying to calm the other guy down," affirmed the other captain holding Mansfield. "They both just went--nuts, all of a sudden."
Just then, the on duty nurse rushed into the room. "Dr. Fraiser! We have an emergency! Section C, two men down!"
"What is going on around here?!" Janet demanded of the world at large, before her professionalism kicked in. "Nurse, get this man onto a bed and give him a check up. Call in the trauma team to the gateroom." With that, she was out of the room herself.
Daniel and SG-2 exchanged concerned looks.
"Is it just me," Kawalasky asked the room at length, "or does something feel...screwy...about all this?"
"I'm getting a really bad feeling myself," Daniel agreed, scrutinizing the face of the still-unconscious Mansfield.
As it turned out, the emergency in the gateroom turned out to be another impromptu fisticuffs that had broken out between Lt. Heller of SG-4 and Lt. Johnson of SG-3. In the midst of the tussle, someone had broken the windows of the conference room, and then later both men had crashed through that broken window to land two floors onto the gateroom floor. Both parties had been unfortunate in the fall, resulting in a broken neck for one and a severed artery for the other who died soon after the medical team had reached them.
Even more unfortunately, the bouts of inexplicable violence began to increase, causing General Hammond to call for a lockdown of the SGC. Before long, they'd had to convert DEFCON living compartments of the base into isolation chambers, and then holding chambers, for the affected people.
"It's the Touched," Daniel finally declared, joining the general and Janet in the main infirmary room.
"Pardon, Dr. Jackson?"
"The primitives on P3X-797. They were called the Touched. According to the natives, normal people who are affected by this 'curse', regress and become primitives."
"You're saying these men are affected by a curse?" Hammond asked skeptically.
"Of course not," Daniel replied, "but the people of P3X-797 aren't advanced enough to know about how diseases work."
"Which means that a virus would seem to them to be a curse," Janet finished for him. "If the symptoms match, then it's very possible that this virus was brought back from the planet. It would further explain why the members of SG-4 were involved in the earliest cases."
"But Dr. Jackson also visited the planet with SG-4," Hammond reminded her.
Janet studied the archaeologist with a clinical eye. "It's possible that there's something about him which gives him a defense or immunity against the virus," she postulated. "After all, the entire population of that planet wasn't affected by the virus, so there must be some defense against it."
"And SG-2," Daniel added. "I've been talking to them. They've been getting by with a little headache here and there since the last few incidents happened, but nothing that some aspirin hadn't been able to cure. Now I'm wondering ... "
"They might have caught the same virus but are just showing different symptoms," Dr. Fraiser finished for him. Her eyes lit up in speculation."The planet they went to - there may have been some environmental factor there that's protecting them, and Frakes could have passed it onto Dr. Jackson. I need to recheck the blood samples..."
"Keep me apprised, Doctor," Hammond said ruefully, "and let me know if you need anything."
"Oh!" Janet paused at the door and turned back as if just remembering something . "Actually , yes, it would be good if 2 can get a blood sample from the healthy population of..." she trailed off, not quite remembering the planetary designation in question.
"The Land of Light." Daniel put in helpfully. "General, SG-2 and I can do that, since we haven't been affected by the virus so far."
"Very well. Dr. Jackson," Hammond had little choice but to agree. "You have a go."
- cure points to lystic histamine

Notes:
I tried to leave Jack out of this fic as I want to expand my writing horizons to the other characters. The story takes place while he is on medical leave after P3R-636. I managed to resist having him coming in after lockdown was lifted and getting jumped by a delayed-infected Sam. *cough* The unfortunate side effect is that Sam got left out of the fic too.
