This.

It's not that I object to the project in theory. Goodness knows it's possible we'll wipe ourselves off the face of the Earth. But... the method for selecting humanity's greatest achievements via internet poll and linked to a not-very-well-selling MMO? Uh, only if you want to rename it "Humanity's most currently fashionable achievements according to the US teenage demographics". =_=

Seriously, much as I loved LOTR and know that HP has been all the hype the last few years, I really don't think they'd make the top 5 greatest books of all time. Also sucks that the greatest works of art, the greatest poets, and most influential person categories didn't have any works/people of Asian origin.

Gyah.

I totally object to the project in theory. If we do kill off ourselves and some alien comes around and resurrects us from the DNA of the people who are the richest top 1%, just think what the newly resurrected human race would look like? Ewwwwww.

Too much Jurassic Park? I wouldn't think it'd be possible to resurrect us from our DNA. Unless they got frozen eggs & sperm in those banks that can last a couple million years.

Not like the rest of us would be around to complain by that point. :P

Also, I thought the DNA samples were to be chosen from famous artists, sports people, etc. So not just the richest top 1%...

Nah, I don't think those who resurrect us will be stupid enough to let the crazy people do the work. (Although I don't particularly like the idea of humans being brought up in captivity to the amusement of some alien being. There's enough of that in religion already.) I think the idea is that if someone had the genetic code, then they can reconstruct and clone the genome, which isn't too far of a stretch, since we're already artificially coding primers.

Of course we won't be there to complain by that point, but I still object to it in theory. :p

And of course it's the richest 1%. Who do you think have the money to fund a project like this?

I would never consider LOTR to be among the ''top 5 greatest books of all time''. That's going a mite far.
