Quicksilver

“Anou...Shishido-san, are you sure you don’t need any help?” Ohtori twitched as the moutain of baggage that completely towered over the not-so-mountainous form determinedly carrying them down the halls of the Psidai dormitory tilted yet more percariously with every step. His hands were clenched around the violin case that was the only thing he had been allowed to carry the moment Hyoutei’s charter bus arrived at the academy that he was going to spend the next few years at.

“Of course not!” Shishido’s muffled voice immediately reassured his kouhai from somewhere among the pile. “You just becareful with that violin of yours, Choutarou.” Especially after that last incident back in high school which ended up in him replacing the aforementioned instrument on three day’s notice(1), Shishido felt he had perfect rights to be downright paranoid over that violin.

“Y-yes, Shishido-san!” Ohtori immediately replied, with a slightly guilty voice that of course completely flew over the other boy’s already-encumbered head. With a sigh of relief at both escaping the topic and for the sake of his nerves, Ohtori pushed open the door to suite 81. “Ah! We’re here, Shishido-san! Eh? ...Shishido-san? I thought your room was over there?”

Blinking in confusion, because it wasn’t as if he hadn’t visited his senpai the previous school year (never mind that Psidai was a closed campus), and the administration couldn’t have moved Shishido-san’s room for the new school year, could they?

“It is,” Shishido’s reply effectively cut off that line of speculation. “But I thought your key was to room A?”

“Eh?” Ohtori immediately pulled out the key that had been assigned to him for a closer look. Sure enough, he’d been so happy at the fact that seeing the “81” emblazoned on the keychain that he hadn’t noticed the small inobstrusive “A” below it.

“...Oh.”

It was into that uncomfortable silence (at least for Ohtori – Shishido was merely waiting for his kouhai to unlock the goddamn door so he could unload all those bags) which the door in question suddenly swung open.

“Nfu, I see the Hyotei bus has arrived precisely on schedule,” came the gleeful voice of the former St. Rudolph tennis club manager, one Mizuki Hajime, whose graceful entry into the lounge was somewhat spoiled by his hurried dodge around the encumbered steamroller that was Shishido marching into the room.

“...And you must be Ohotri Choutarou, my current assigned roommate,” Mizuki finished with a flat statement of fact as he scrutinized the tall boy in front of him with an eerily interested look.

“Uh, nice to meet you, uh...” Ohtori began as he edged around his rather disturbing new roommate whose name he hadn’t learned yet and slipped into the room after Shishido. He had to help with those bags of course.

Unfortunately, Mizuki followed him into the room (nevermind that being his new roommate, it was naturally also Mizuki’s room), and Shishido was already on his way out.

“I’ll be right back after I kick Jiroh awake, Choutarou,” Shishido assured his kouhai as he walked off into his own room while muttering dark things about Atobe and menial labor.

That left Ohtori in the same room as the creepy guy who Ohtori still didn’t know the name of and who was starting to rattle off words that had him backing slowly toward the door again.

“...I see the information I have on you is completely accurate. At 185 cm you are the second tallest of your former team here, and if I could measure you, I’m sure my other measurements would be correct too...”

“Uh...that’s really okay,” Ohtori immediately stammered, holding his violin case in front of him like a shield.

“Now, now,” Mizuki chided as he pulled a tape measure out of nowhere, “don’t be shy now. This wouldn’t hurt a bit.”

“Y-you really don’t need to go to the trouble...” Ohtori stiffened as his back suddenly came into contact with the half-open door. Was that a slight tremor in the ground he felt?

“It’s no trouble at all,” Mizuki drawled. “We’re going to be roommates, after all. In order to advance such close, long-term relationship--”

*rumblerumble~CRACK*

Both occupants of the room whirled around as a huge crack split asunder the cheap thin walls that separated room 81A from 81B(2). Ohtori was fortunate in having a solid object at his back to help him maintain his balance on the shaky ground. Mizuki, however, was not so lucky and fell flat on his face.

“Shi...Shishido-san?” Ohtori looked on bewilderedly as his boyfriend stormed through the new opening between the two rooms dragging the still-slumbering form of a certain narcoleptic over one shoulder.

Without a word, Shishido dumped his burden on top of Mizuki’s fallen form with a satisfying squeak (from Mizuki, that is, as Jiroh merely turned in his sleep and resumed snoring). Then with a scowl, he grabbed Ohtori by the arm and herded the other toward his own room.

“You’re rooming with me, Choutarou.” There was no way that Shishido Ryou was going to let his innocent kouhai out into the clutches of that... that octopus.

It took a moment for Ohtori to suddenly realize what his senpai just said and a dazed happy grin to spread over his face.

“Hai! Shishido-san!”

Afterword:

1) According to the Hyotei rumor mill, aka one Mukahi Gakuto, said incident involved the entire strings section of the Hyotei orchestra, a Hyotei High music teacher who had since (ie. immedately) “retired” from teaching, a bumbling lovesick second year who really couldn’t carry out a good romantic plan if his life depended on it (much to Mukahi’s disgust), and one completely clueless idiot. According to one Oshitari Yuushi (the other half of said rumor mill), at least for that month, Shishido was actually and honestly broke for once in his life.

2) After a year of cleaning up the walking earthquake that was Shishido, the Psidai janitorial and (re)construction staff had long come to the conclusion that, job security aside, for the sake of the school not going broke and them not having to work around the clock and often 3-4 times at the most ungodly hours of the late nights and early mornings, it’s best to just hold together the walls of that room with cardboard and duct tape until people start falling through them.

Footnotes (for real this time):

Wow, it’s a long time since I’ve written... I think cashew’s muses have been visiting or something, since I don’t usually write Shishido/Ohtori. Well, on the bright side, at least this is no longer a one-fic series. ^_^;;
