Celestial Tokens
"Shishido-san!"
The boy in question looked up from the couch to see Ohtori burst into the room, bouncing on his heels with energy and generally looking about to explode himself.
"What's got you so excited, Choutarou?" Shishido asked, smiling indulgently at the other’s enthusiasm.
“Did you know that Honda-senpai has a uncle who’s an astronaut?” Honda Tomoe was a first year graduate student and the first chair for flutes on the Psidai Symphonic Orchestra. “He was part of the last International Lunar Expedition and he brought back a rock from the moon for her! Honda-senpai was showing it to all of us after practice today...”
Shishido’s amused smile sharpened as he listened to Ohtori chatter on about the pretty-looking over-sized bit of extraterrestrial soil. His eyes narrowed at the younger boy’s slightly wistful undertone.
“You know, Honda-senpai is really lucky to get such a wonderful gift from her uncle, isn’t it, Shishido-san... Shishido-san?”
Ohtori stared wide-eyed as Shishido suddenly jumped to his feet and headed for the door.
“I’ll be right back, Choutarou!” was the only explanation flung behind the older boy’s departing back.
It only took a moment for Shishido to make his way upstairs to Inui’s and Yanagi’s room. As usual, the security at the door automatically let him in, since both the data duo knew full well that trying Shishido’s patience just meant that their carefully installed security would need to be completely overhauled, again.
Shishido slammed the door open and fixed a demanding glare at the two surprised faces that faced him.
“I need a moon rock. Now.”
Inui and Yanagi gaped at him for a moment.
“Moon... rock?” Yanagi sweatdropped.
“...As in the band?” Inui asked tentatively.
“No! As in a rock! From the moon! And I want it now!”
Yanagi, due to his powers, could already feel the bare wisps of disruption beginning to emanate from their irate visitor.
“Alright! Alright! We’ll get you your moon rock!” the former Rikkai dataman agreed quickly.
“Just give us a few moments!” Inui added hastily. “Don’t break anything! Please!”
“I’ll be right outside,” Shishido told them, slamming the door behind him as he withdrew into the suite lounge.
Inui and Yanagi stared at one another for a tense moment.
“Infinite Improbability Drive?”
“Aa. I’ll get the coordinates.”
“Who’s going to go there?”
“You.”
“Like hell.”
“Rock, paper, scissors?”
Before the battle lines could be drawn for a ruthless all-out match of chance and cunning, Kaidoh walked into the room. The younger boy froze when he saw the looks that greeted him, and immediately realized that his horrendous luck had struck again.
Less than 10 seconds later, a huge ball of fluffiness popped into existence in the middle of Room 80A and normalized into a near-frozen boy holding onto a large chunk of lunar ore. While Inui hurried to check on the state of his near-unconscious kouhai, Yanagi went to the door to call Shishido.
Shishido had eyes only for the item that he had come for, and near effortlessly picked up the lump of rock that was half his size and radiating a surface temperature significantly below zero, swung it onto one shoulder, and marched out of the room. Yanagi would have rolled his eyes if that had been possible.
Moments later, Ohtori gaped with wide disbelieving eyes as his Shishido-san dropped his precious burden into the room they shared. His eyes positively sparkled as they met the warm gaze that Shishido returned over the large slab of icy rock.
“Can’t you two find some other time to make cow eyes at each other?” finally interrupted the put-upon drawl of Oshitari from the door. “You’re going to be late to practice again.”
The next day, Ohtori eagerly presented his piece of moon rock to the rest of the orchestra before music practice. Everyone was properly appreciative of it, no one being suicidal enough to openly doubt that Shishido could get the moon itself for his Choutarou.
Then, as everyone was dispersing toward their positions for practice, one of the clarinet players suddenly ran into the hall just short of being officially late, flushed and squealing as she waved a certificate over her head.
“Look! Look! My boyfriend got me this for my birthday from one of those star-naming agencies! He got me a star!”
Immediately, she was congratulated by the other girls in the orchestra, the general consensus being that the gift was “sooo romantic!”
Ohtori sighed, just a bit wistfully.
“I wish I had a star.”
