Part 2.0.1: Domino Effect

In the commotion following Hiko-sensei’s announcement, Atobe was the first to rise from his seat.

“Kabaji! Fetch Shishido. We’re leaving.”

“Uss.”

Not even looking to make sure that his orders were being carried out, Atobe then turned to Tezuka with a sly smile.

“Ne, Tezuka. Shall we get together sometime to practice doubles?”

The innocuous sentence immediately sent half the Seigaku members, who were also getting up from their seats, crashing down in a collective face plant. Over at Fudomine’s section, Kamio choked on the sip of water he’d just taken.

Atobe looked around innocently. “What? Was it something I said?”

Kamio was still choking. Fuji and Echizen looked murderous while the rest of their team looked disturbed. But it was Shinji who answered the question.

“Well, that was really crude of Atobe-san to say. It’s really not polite of him to so directly proposition Tezuka-san for sex right in front of everyone. I mean, he knows that all of Seigaku uses the phrase ‘practice for doubles’ as a shorthand for having inappropriate relations with your so-called partner, even though I don’t understand why they even allowed that kind of a custom to form when you should only do that kind of thing when you’re in private and not when you’re supposed to be actually working on your tennis playing abilities…”

“Shinji,” Tachibana coughed in warning, halting his problem child’s mumbling.

Unfortunately, it was too late. Mizuki, who had been half-heartedly eavesdropping, perked up at that half-heard bit of gossip.

“You mean Atobe proposed to Tezuka?!”

Kirihara, who had just slunk back into the room while keeping Kabaji firmly between himself and Shishido, stopped midstep on his way back to his seat.

“What? Tezuka-san and Atobe are getting married?”

The rumor began to spread through the room. Tezuka glared. Atobe smirked.

Mukahi leapt onto his chair and shook a finger at his archrival and temporary Senbatsu doubles partner.

“Kikumaru! There’s no way I’m practicing doubles with YOU!”

Eiji jumped onto his chair as well and mirror the other’s actions. “Like I would want to practice doubles with YOU!” he shot back.

Another heated argument between the two acrobats immediately ensued.

Yanagi grinned as he listened to Niou explain what happened earlier to the somewhat confused Kirihara. He looked across the table at his childhood friend.

“Sadaharu, should we also arrange to practice doubles as well?”

“HSSSTT!” Kaidoh’s fingers dug into the tablecloth as he glared at Yanagi. It was difficult to tell if he sounded like a threatening snake or a threatening cat.

Inui just patted his kouhai on the head. “Now, now, Kaoru,” he soothed with a disturbing grin, “I’m sure it’ll be fine for you to join us.”

“S-senpai!”

Momo and Echizen both inched away from the disturbing conversation. Oishi was lucky not to have heard, having his hands full trying to calm down Eiji.

Meanwhile, Shishido had also heard from an obliging Ohtori about what had caused the whole mess, and immediately had also reacted violently.

“Choutarou! You’re not going to practice doubles with that Kirihara either!” he demanded, following Mukahi’s example.

“But Shishido-san!” Ohtori objected, “how are we going to play doubles…”

“You’re. Not. Practicing.” Shishido insisted.

“H-hai!”

Kirihara shuddered at the glare that Shishido shot him. “Anou… I don’t think I want to practice with Ohtori-kun either,” he squeaked.

“Oh, don’t worry about it, Akaya,” Yanagi told him with an eerie smile of his own. “I suppose you could come practice with Sadaharu, Kaidoh-kun, and me.”

Kirihara stared at his senpai wide-eyed, then abruptly keeled backwards in a dead faint.

“Hm… I suppose he and Kaidoh can practice against us, Renji,” Inui added thoughtfully.

Kaidoh made a choking noise and then joined the Rikkai second-year in sweet oblivion.

Grinning at his success and feeling fairly confident with three people between them, Yanagi looked up the table at his unamused fukubuchou.

“Saa, Genichirou. So are you going to practice doubles with Echizen as well?”

Echizen, who had just taken a sip of Ponta, immediately spewed a mouthful of the orange soda all over Momoshiro sitting next to him.

“Oi!” Momo jumped away from him, too late to avoid being splattered, and accidentally slammed his elbow into Inui, who had been leaning over Kaidoh to resuscitate his kouhai.

Reeling from the pain that came from having been struck across his glasses, Inui jerked backwards and crashed into Oishi, who had his back turned as he was trying to pull Eiji back into his seat. This sent Oishi falling forward into Eiji, knocking the Seigaku acrobat off balance and careening toward Mukahi.

Mukahi, seeing the finger that was pointed at him now shooting toward his face, jumped backwards onto the table to avoid being stabbed in the eye. Unfortunately, his perfect landing was spoiled when his foot slipped on some slippery food item, sending the Hyotei acrobat into a wind milling flip. One of his feet lashed out in mid-fall, and kicked an errant plate across the table into Shinji’s face.

Shinji, who had tried to avoid the plate but failed, crashed against Kamio sitting next to him. The Fudomine speed demon, who had not quite recovered from his choking fit, now flailed about his seat. Tachibana, who had been sitting on his other side, had already jumped out of his seat when Shinji was hit, and thus avoided Kamio’s antics. Mizuki, sitting behind Kamio, was not so lucky, and was knocked quite roughly into the table, sending his glass of juice flying toward Sengoku.

Sengoku was saved by his quick reflexes, as he was already leaping back out of his chair. However, his leg caught the edge of the table he was sitting at, upending it completely.

“Lucky,” Sengoku breathed before he realized that he had just showered all those sitting across from him with foodstuff. “Oops.”

Meanwhile, Mukahi had performed two more back flips in an attempt to regain his balance, before crashing down on top of the edge of the table next to Shinji, thereby upending that table as well toward the two Fudomine boys and everyone else on that side. Tachibana breathed a sigh of relief at having escaped the disaster early.

Atobe, on the other hand, had jumped backwards when the table in front of him started tilting, unknowingly crashing right towards Tezuka’s back. Fuji, seeing this, haphazardly leapt between the two of them, taking his chair with him as his foot caught in it. Thus Atobe lost his balance as he crashed into Fuji and tripped over the chair, and the both of them fell against Tezuka, sending all three of them toppling onto the edge of the last table and the table itself flipping vertically into the front stand.

“Gyah!” Hiko jumped aside and narrowly avoided the incoming table as it crashed into the podium.

Sakaki gave him an exasperated look, though not many would have noticed the change in his expression to signify that.

“So much for them being too satiated to protest.”

Author's Notes:

1. This chapter is titled 2.0.1 because it occurs immediately after chapter 2.

2. The short-hand of "practicing doubles" started when the GP were in their first year of Senior High. Since they weren't going to be on the Regulars anytime soon, they had to take their doubles practice into their own hands. However, being alone together had its effects and they usually ended up not actually doing any tennis much of the time. After a while, and due to the obviousness of the Golden Aura, just about the entire Seigaku tennis club knows what's going on, and thus automatically associtates "practicing for doubles" as the anything but actual practice.

Fudomine found out about the above custom during one of their practice games against Seigaku:

Random flashback~~~

"Gather up, everyone!" Hiko-sensei announced to the Seigaku tennis club. "We're going to have a practice session with one of our rival schools today!"

"Not Hyotei AGAIN!" whined Eiji not-so-quietly.

"Nope! Today we're practing with Fudomine," Hiko-sensei announced as he stepped aside to reveal the newly arrived Fudomine team. "Well, everyone. Why don't you all do free practice for the rest of the--"

"You! I challenge you!" Kamio was already standing in front of Kaidoh, his finger inches away from the other boy's face. "Finally, I'll have my rematch for that game we played back in junior high--hey! Wait a minute! Oi, oi! Where are you going?!"

"Senpai!" Kaidoh protested as he tried to pry loose his collar, which was chafing him from Inui dragging him away. "Let me go! I can walk!"

"Of course you can, Kaidoh," Inui said agreeably. "I just wanted to make sure you'll play a doubles game with me against that pair I had to play against with Eiji."

"B-but I wanted to play singles!" Kaidoh came very close to whining, though not many recognized the alien tone to his voice.

"Later, later," Inui promised him. "But I'm sure you won't mind practicing doubles with me for just a little bit first." His glasses gleamed.

Kaidoh choked, not from his chafing collar, and blushed. So did many of the other Seigaku tennis club members.

"Inui!" Eiji exclaimed, scandalized.

"Not in public!" Oishi finished, also sounding scandalized.

The rest of Fudomine blinked at the non-sequitor.

"Not... play... doubles... in public?" Ishida asked, bewildered.

"No, not PRACTICE doubles in public," Eiji corrected him.

"Huh?"

"Of course you shouldn't do that in public," Shinji mumbled, picking up on the thoughts of those around him. "It's indecent to say something like that when everyone at your club already knows that you know that they all know that when someone here says they want to practice doubles, it really means that they're going to go do ecchi things with their doubles partner instead of actually doing any tennis. Except I don't understand why you let people do that when it's distracting everyone from actually practicing tennis and that kind of thing should really be done in private instead of at school during club hours. I bet Tachibana-san wouldn't let that kind of thing happen at Fudomine, though none of us really have anyone on the team that we'd want to practice doubles with without actually doing any tennis--"

"Shinji!" Tachibana choked out. "That's enough!" Far too much information, that is.

The rest of Fudomine collectively face-planted to the ground.
