And the Children Shall Lead
Part 1

Seigaku:

Mere days after the week of the tortuous training with their arch rival school, the Seigaku Regulars were not happy in the least when their coach told them to stay after practice for yet another assuredly insane announcement. However, under Tezuka’s commanding glares, they could do little but keep their disgruntlement to themselves as they waited for whatever new pronouncement of doom was in store for them. The smile on Hiko-sensei’s face was not comforting.

“Ahem. As I’m sure you’ll all remember, last week was Volunteer Week for our school, which is mandatory for all students to participate in.”

Actually, most of them didn’t remember, except for Oishi and Tezuka who were on the student council, and possibly Inui because he was just anal like that.

“However, since we missed it due to our training camp, I’ve gotten special permission from the school to make it up for you Regulars. Now, since the normal variety of volunteer slots won’t be open anymore, it was easier just to register you all for a single activity.”

Everyone tensed as they each hurried to think of the worst volunteer activity possible, if only so their expectations might be below reality, and thus be pleasantly surprised.

“So for the rest of this week, you will be voluntary tutors for the K-12 branch of Seishun Gakuen. You’ll be helping out in the classroom, taking over for several teachers who have a day of vacation coming up, and helping tutor some of the children who are behind outside of class.”

The Regulars all exchanged looks. Well, the job didn’t sound bad, did it? Those among the team who had younger siblings were almost excited about the job, and the others were slowly catching on to their enthusiasm.

Hiko-sensei just smiled. He wondered how Okina was doing getting the Hyotei bunch into a classroom full of little kids.

Hyotei:

“Wheeeeeee! Wheeeeeee! Look at meeeeee!”

“Anou… Gakuto,” Oshitari stuttered as he slowly approached his bouncing doubles partner. “…Don’t you think that’s enough? You’re going to scramble his brain if you keep flinging him around like that.”

“Oh, don’t be a bore, Yuushi,” Mukahi drawled as he did a midair back flip while swinging the boy he was holding in a wide arc around his twisting body. “Anyone can tell he’s having fun!”

“…But is it safe?” Oshitari muttered as he carefully moved forward to keep up with his partner, silently sweating as he followed the gyrating pendulum that the little boy in Mukahi’s arms had been reduced to.

“Of course it’s safe, Yuushi! What do you take me for--oops!”

Unfortunately, the next swing caused the boy to fly out of Mukahi’s arms, leaving the acrobat holding onto a loose blue jacket.

“Gyah!” Oshitari jumped and dove, barely catching the falling boy in his outstretched hands. He landed hard on the ground, his face planted on the floor. His glasses, made to withstand the worst of Shishido’s temper, remained intact though askew on his face when he looked up at the child he’d just saved. “Are you all right?”

The boy blinked at him, looking utterly blank.

“Oh no!” Muhaki was suddenly perched on his back, leaning over his shoulder to stare at the boy in his hands. “I broke his brain!”

Oshitari let his head fall onto the ground once more with a dull thunk.

Seigaku:

“All right, class, these are your senpai-tachi from Seigaku high school’s tennis Regulars. They’re here to be your tutors for the day. Let’s all welcome them!”

Tezuka stepped forward. “We’re all pleased to be here,” he said politely and bowed. The rest of his team followed his example.

But before they finished bowing, a shrill cry rang through the room.

“Syuuuuuuuusuke!!”

Everyone looked up in surprise and saw a young girl in the third row waving cheerfully at the ever-smiling tensai.

Fuji cringed. “K-Kurumi-chan? What are you doing here?”

Kurumi giggled. “Oh, I asked my parents to transfer me into Seigaku after our last date together!”

“DATE!?” exclaimed the rest of the Seigaku team.

“Anou… Fuji…” Oishi began, “…you and her…but your age differences…”

But Eiji suddenly interrupted his stuttering partner. “Oh! I remember you, Kurumi-chan! You’re Fuji’s fiancé!”

“That’s right!” Momo added in while everyone else gaped in shock, “I remember too!”

“FIANCE?!” Everyone else exclaimed with the exception of the ever stoic Tezuka, and Fuji, who had frozen in shock.

Echizen blinked in confusion. “Anou… Momo-senpai, I don’t think she’s--” He didn’t get to finish.

“Hai!” Kurumi agreed enthusiastically. “I’m going to marry Syuusuke!”

Under the collective stares of his teammates, some of whom were far too amused, Fuji desperately hoped for a hole to open up in the ground and swallow him whole.

Hyotei:

“Sugoi! Shishido-san!” “Shishido-senpai, kakkoi!” “Shishido-san!”

Shishido waded through the crowd of children as if through a great mass of molasses. He had absolutely no idea why all the kids were swarming him of all the Hyotei Regulars, but he hadn’t the heart to rudely scare them away, and all the attention was beginning to unnerve him. So, for a lack of any alternative, he bore the fawning as forcibly politely as he could while cursing Okina-sensei in his mind.

Suddenly, something at the edge of his peripheral vision caught his attention. Shishido paused in his steps and turned to address his teammate who was skulking in the corner.

“Oi, Wakashi! What do you think you’re doing!”

Hiyoshi looked up from where he has dangling a fifth grader by the collar at arm length, and promptly dropped the little boy to the ground. “Sumimasen,” he apologized as the boy immediately scampered away to join Shishido’s growing following, then mumbled something else unintelligibly under his breath and tried even harder to merge into the shadows.

Needless to say, Hiyoshi didn’t know the first thing about dealing with little kids, and felt entirely out of place in a classroom full of them.

Shishido, satisfied that Hiyoshi wasn’t going to torture any more children, continued to slog through the crowd to reach his doubles partner. He found Ohtori sitting in the middle of a small ring of little boys… putting away his wallet?

“Choutarou, what are you doing?” Shishido asked.

“Oh, Shishido-san!” Ohtori jumped to his feet to greet his Shishido-san, sheepishly scratching at the back of his head. “It’s just that some of the kids forgot their lunch money, so I thought it should be my duty as a senpai to make sure they don’t starve and give them some money to buy lunch.”

Shishido stared at his kouhai in confusion. “Lunch money? But lunch meals are provided by the school and covered in our tuition.”

“Oh,” Ohtori blinked. “Maybe I misunderstood then, and they meant snack money? Well, it doesn’t matter anyway, since I don’t mind spending the money and I’m sure they’ll all put it to good use.” Then he smiled brightly, nearly gushing. “Besides, how could I say no to their cute little faces?”

Shishido sweatdropped and slapped his hand to his forehead. “Choutarou, only you would still get pushed around by elementary school kids…” he muttered, more to himself, “…I fear letting you loose into the world.”

Seigaku:

“EEEK! S-s-scary man!”

Kaidoh froze as third child ran from him. His arm fell limply to his side and the storybook he held dropped to the ground in a soft plop. He really should be used to these kinds of reactions, he told himself; it was why he preferred to be antisocial, after all. Resolutely keeping his crushed feelings from showing up on his face, Kaidoh shuffled over to the chair in one corner of the room and flopped down, keeping his eyes fixed on the smudge of dirt on his sneakers.

He was therefore completely taken by surprise when a hand suddenly ruffled through his hair. Kaidoh jerked up in surprise to see his Inui-senpai dropping into the seat next to him.

“Awww, don’t be so sad, Kaidoh,” Inui told him, “I’m sure if they knew you better they wouldn’t be afraid of you. …Well, unless they’re facing you across a tennis court.”

Kaidoh looked down to hide his gratefulness at Inui’s attempt (awkward though it was) at trying to cheer him up. “Anou… shouldn’t you be tutoring the kids, senpai?” he asked roughly. If anyone was up to the task of tutoring and lecturing, it was probably Inui.

“Not today, it seems. Tezuka told me rather forcefully to go sit in the corner.” Inui grinned ruefully as Kaidoh looked up in surprise. “I’m not sure why he seemed to be so disapproving of my plans for the, ah, science lessons of the day. Chemistry can be very fun, after all, especially when you can ingest the results. Why, I even brought a sample…”

Kaidoh shuddered as Inui’s glasses glinted, suddenly understanding very well why Tezuka felt it necessary to keep Inui out of the way. He wasn’t sure that being forced to listen to his senpai wax poetic about his horrific Inui Juices was any better than brooding alone in the corner.

Meanwhile, Echizen shot rather envious glances at his senpai-tachi who didn’t have to deal with the clingy little kids that were swarming him. He couldn’t even pretend that he was one of the grade-schoolers, after the last reprimand he received from Tezuka. Sighing, he turned his apathetic attention back to the boys who were dragging him along to who-knows-where.

Hyotei:

It was a while before anyone bothered to wonder where Jiroh was. But Atobe felt it was his duty to keep tabs on his team while they were doing this “duty” together, difficult and distasteful the job might seem sometimes. So eventually he sent out Kabaji and Hiyoshi to look for the narcoleptic teen.

They found Jiroh asleep in one of the first grade classrooms, for no reason anyone could think of since they hadn’t visited any of the first grade rooms that day. Rather, he was trying to stay asleep, while a group of highly active children had made a game of jumping off a nearby chair in a belly flop to land on his stomach, prompting him to squeak into wakefulness every once in a while.

Hiyoshi winced and wondered at the insanity of his senpai, who apparently couldn’t even feel pain while he was in slumber.

Atobe was half of the mind to just leave Jiroh there, since he was technically doing his duty, at least in entertaining the kids. However, in the end he decided that it was better to have all of his team members where he could see them, just in case. Besides, if Jiroh could sleep through that, then he might as well try to sleep through the belly flops of the older kids too. The worst it could do was to keep the narcoleptic teen awake.

Seigaku:

“Hoi, hoi! Let’s go, Momo!”

“Gotcha, Eiji-senpai!”

“Yay! Eiji-senpai! Momo-chan-senpai! Do that again!”

“Anou, Eiji! Momo!” Oishi called out as he ran worriedly after the other two. “Are you sure you should be doing that?”

“Why not, Oishi-senpai!” Momo called out. “It’s fun!”

“But I think it’s against the rules to--”

“Oh come on, Oishi!” Eiji turned as he ran. “Lighten up!”

“Eiji! Look ou--”

*CRASH*

“Eiji! Momo! Are the children all right?!”

“Wheeee! Eiji-senpai! Momo-chan-senpai! This is fun!”

“Yeah! Let’s do it again?!”

Oishi felt like fainting. Or maybe it was just that he was being run ragged after the other two. Perhaps it was time to take a rest. And he didn’t mean him.

“I think it’s time for a story,” he announced. “Momo, why don’t you fetch one of the books on that table.”

“Eh, but…”

“Momo.” Even Oishi had his breaking points.

“Hai, hai!” Momoshiro almost ran to the table. It wasn’t everyday that his usually mellow fukubuchou put his foot down. He reached out for the top-most book, only to find it being held down by one of Kaidoh’s arms as the other teen lounged in the chair next to the table.

“Oi, Mamushi, move it!”

Kaidoh glared at him and hissed. “What do you want, stupid peach?”

“Who are you calling stupid?” Momo shot back reflexively. “You’re the one who’s stupid, scaring away the kids so you don’t have to do any work.”

“What was that?!” Kaidoh snapped, jumping to his feet and grabbing for Momo’s collar. “You’re the one who’s stupid! The only reason you get along with the kids is because you’re the same mental age as them!”

“What?! You want to fight?!” Momoshiro dropped the book he had been holding and clenched his hand into a fist.

“Kaidoh! Momoshiro!” Tezuka’s voice immediately cut through their argument, promising swift and grueling punishment if they didn’t start behaving two seconds ago. The two second-years immediately let go of each other and turned to their buchou.

“Sumimasen,” they muttered in unison.

Tezuka gave them one last glare before turning back to his supervision over Fuji, who was trying to figure out a way to kill all the girls gossiping right in front of him about his supposed relationship with Kurumi without Tezuka noticing.

Hyotei:

“All right, everyone,” Atobe called out. “That’s about it for the day. Gather around.”

To the disappointed aww’s of the children, the Hyotei Regulars gathered around their buchou.

“Say, Atobe,” Mukahi spoke up when he reached them, “come to think of it, we’ve been doing most of the work today. Aren’t you going to do something for the kids?”

Oshitari and Shishido traded disbelieving looks at the thought of Atobe doing anything to cater to a bunch of little children. But to everyone’s surprise, Atobe merely smirked with his usual confidence and took a step forward.

“Of course,” he drawled. “There’s no way that ore-sama is going to leave without being the spotlight of the day.”

Everyone sweatdropped as they waited for whatever insane idea their narcissistic buchou had in mind. Atobe snapped his fingers.

“Kabaji. Music.”

No one was overly surprised when Kabaji brought out a portable karaoke set from nowhere…or the portable multi-colored spotlights. Atobe was always prepared like that. The lights dimmed. The music started, beginning with a pre-recorded chorus.

“ABC, ABC, ABCD E Kimochi. ABC, ABC, ABC Ahh…”

As the rest of the team blinked at the cutesy children choir in the background, Atobe raised a microphone to his lips and sang.

“Kyuu ni kirei ni natta ano ko ni…”

The walls of the room faded out as the power of Atobe’s voice took effect. A pink fog covered everything, and sparkles glinted about in the air.

“…Yatara kimekonde kuru yatsu ni mo…”

The children, who were by now swaying with the song, suddenly found themselves dressed in large cute animal costumes ranging from kittens to bunnies to chicks.

“…Sou sa uwasa wa hikari no hayasa yori hayai yo…”

The Hyotei team was the next to find themselves altered. Oshitari became a large banzai tree, with Mukahi a butterfly that was perched on one of his branches. Jiroh turned into a large pillow with a puff of purple smoke and was immediately jumped by several children in chick outfits.

“…Joushiki nante buttobase…”

Shishido and Ohtori found themselves dressed in canine outfits, the former as a droop-eared hound and the latter as a puppy with an eagerly wagging tail. Hiyoshi unhappily took on the appearance of a human-sized mushroom.

“…ABC ABC haan E kimochi…” The children began to sing along with the chorus.

As he sang, Atobe sauntered forward until he was in the middle of the swaying children. His haughty look had not left his face, and yet his expression somehow did not clash with the saccharine tune he was singing.

“…ABC ABC haan E kimochi…” Shishido winced as Ohtori also joined along with the chorus. You would never know from just listening to the younger boy that Ohtori played first violin in the Hyotei high school orchestra.

“…ABC ABC haan E kimochi!”

When the song finished, the rest of the Hyotei team was gaping in shock both from their transformations and at hearing something so… so shockingly sweet and adorable and kawaii from their normally suave or solemn buchou. They were in for more shock when Atobe was suddenly surrounded by a stampede of small bodies.

“Atobe-senpai is so cool!” “Sugoi! Atobe-sama!”

Atobe smiled arrogantly and tossed his head back, causing all the girls in the room to squeal with hearts in their eyes.

“Please, call me…Keigo-sama.”

The Hyotei Regulars, with the exception of Kabaji, hit the ground in a collective faceplant.

“Keigo-sama! Kakkoi!”

“Keigo-sama! Do you have to leave?”

“Yeah! Can we see you again, Keigo-sama?”

Atobe’s smile turned smug.

“Let me tell you about the national tournament I’m going to be playing in…”
