Summary: The Golden Pair vs the Platinum Pair at the Kanto Regionals in their second year of high school.

Continuity note: We're mainly using anime characters and continuity for Psidai. However, in this instance, we're using the manga version of the Rikkai-Seigaku Doubles 1 match at the Jr. High Kanto finals. This also means we're using the manga versions of Niou and Yagyuu. So it's going to be laser beams instead of golf moves. Also, we're going to use the manga continuity's Seigaku-Midoriyama game instead of the anime's Seigaku-Jousei Shounen game earlier in Kanto. This way, the Golden Pair haven't done the I-Formation yet.

Revenge Best Served Cold
A Psidai Prequel

It was at the semifinals of the Kanto Regionals in their second year of high school that Seigaku's Golden Pair crossed paths with Rikkai's Platinum Pair once more in the doubles-2 slot. And, just like the first time they met on the courts, the Golden Pair quickly seized the initiative for their first game.

"There it is! Moon Volley!" An excited Momoshiro called out from the sidelines, unconsciously taking up the familiar role of 'expositionist of the obvious' that fell on the non-Regular freshmen of Seigaku.

Undaunted, Niou took a few steps back from his baseline position, his racquet at the ready as he followed the ball up, and up--

"K'so!" *THUD*

"Game, Seigaku, 1-0."

Yagyuu whirled around to stare at his partner, who was rubbing at his eyes and cursing under his breath.

From the sidelines, Inui Sadaharu nodded and scribbled into his notebook, mumbling as he wrote. "Angling the Moon Volley so that it falls on the same line of sight as the late morning sun, thus temporarily blinding and distracting the receiver from returning the shot. An excellent use of situational tactics."

"Heh. That's just like Oishi-senpai," Momo agreed.

In response to their initial loss, Rikkai's doubles team began the second game with a double barrage of Laser Beams. However, this time their opponents were not surprised by the attack, even if the speed of the Laser Beams had increased over the last two years. Kikumaru fell back into the double-back formation, and unleashed his own vastly increased footspeed as a formidable defense.

Then, just as it seemed like the second game was heading into an endless stream of deuces and advantages - *WHACK* - another Moon Volley rose into the sky. This time Yagyuu hurried back toward the baseline as well, hoping that his altered vision would allow him to see enough contrast against the sunlight to spot the falling ball.

*THUD*

Unfortunately, instead of its usual landing spot on top of the baseline, the ball landed squarely atop the sideline at halfway down the right alley.

"Game, Seigaku, 2-0."

With a snarl, Niou ripped off the weighted wrist guards on his arms, his partner following suit. The next game quickly went to the Rikkai duo, who took advantage of Kikumaru's service round to return speeding Laser Beams at the much slower Oishi. Their momentum carried them through the next game, finally getting through their opponent's Oishi Territory formation after a dozen or so deuces.

But at 2-2, the next round was Oishi's serve again, and a murmuring arose from the audience at the Golden Pair's new formation.

"That's not the Australian Formation, is it, senpai?" Kaidoh spoke up for the first time, turning to Inui for an explanation.

The older boy adjusted his glasses as he surveyed the scene on the court. "No it isn't. See how Eiji is crouching at the centerline in a direct line with the server? That's the I-Formation."

"I-Formation?" Momo echoed.

"Yes, it's a much more advanced and powerful version of the Australian Formation. But where the Australian Formation should only be used sparingly as a surprise tactic to get important points, the I-Formation can be used repeatedly on a serve without losing the element of surprise. The positioning of the server and his partner creates a high amount of unpredictability as to where they will move to after the serve, causing great pressure and confusion for the receiver."

"High unpredictability, huh?" Momo mused. "Sounds like it's made for Eiji-senpai."

"Aa. However, this formation is also much more difficult to coordinate than the Australian Formation, and requires the front player to pay more attention to the movements of the server. I knew Oishi and Eiji were trying out this formation, but I didn't think they were ready to use it in a match yet." Inui frowned at the possibility that his predictions, and therefore his data, may have been off.

"Well, they're the Golden Pair. They can do it." Momo said confidently, then put his hands around his mouth. "GO OISHI-SENPAI, EIJI-SENPAI! GANBARE!"

Perhaps their formation wasn't perfect yet. But being the Golden Pair, their coordination was certainly good enough to win them that service game. This time, it would be their momentum which carried them into the next match.

Finally, at yet another round of deuce-advantages, the heavily-pressed Rikkai doubles team felt desperate enough pull out an old trick again.

Due to his precognition, always especially sensitive when it came to his partner, Oishi felt what was coming first.

"Eiji! Danger!"

It was only his quick reflexes and automatic trust in his partner's calls which allowed Eiji to barely escape another possible concussion. As it was, the speeding ball scraped skin as it glanced off the side of his head, sending the redhead into a sprawling tumble onto the ground.

"Eiji!" Oishi was at his partner's side in a flash, not even hearing the referee proclaiming the score 3-3.

"I'm fine, I'm fine," mumbled Eiji as he batted at the probing hands at his temple. "It'll take more than a scrape to stop Kikumaru-sama's acrobatics."

Assured that his partner was indeed mostly unhurt, Oishi's attention turned to the perpetrators of the injury. The fury in his glare was one that had never been seen before on the normally calm member of the Golden Pair. Eiji, whose empathy was ever primarily in tune with his partner's moods, immediately picked up on that fury and turned his own glare on the Rikkai players. That deadly glare was no less alien on the normally cheerful boy as it was on his partner.

Niou took a step back as the wave of fury washed over him, courtesy of the empath whose partner he'd just angered. Belatedly, he wondered if they'd made a mistake trying to unbalance their opponents' mental state with their trick. Nervously, he waved his hands placatingly.

"Eh... Ne, that was an accident! Accident! I swear!"

Back at the sidelines, Kaidoh turned to Inui again. "Tch. That wasn't an accident, was it?"

"85% chance that wasn't an accident," Inui mumbled absently, his eyes fixed intently on the tableau on the courts. A truly angry Golden Pair was a new occurrence that he did not have any previous data on, and he wasn't about to waste this chance. He expected Oishi to start yelling at the Platinum Pair any moment now, just as he did two years ago. He was mildly surprised when, after a short consultation, Eiji merely moved back to serve, his racquet flipping meaningfully around his wrist.

Whatever the Golden Pair had decided on in their consultation became apparent as soon as the ball was in motion. Suddenly, the entire Seigaku side of the court was seemingly full of Kikumaru's.

*WHACK* A Kikumaru Beam slanted down at an angle through the hole left by the unprepared Rikkai pair.

*WHACK* Another one angled the other way down the alley.

*THUDROLLROLL* A light drop volley plopped down next to the net.

*FLASH* A Laser Beam from Yagyuu went so far out of bounds that it was almost on the next court.

*WHACK* A Kikumaru Rocket crashed down between Niou's legs.

Back at the sidelines, Momoshiro had to turn away from the humiliation the Platinum Pair were enduring when his vision started to blur. "Wow! It's like they're playing against seven Kikumaru's!"

"Yagyuu seems to be making a lot of mistakes," Kaidoh observed.

"It's his vision," explained Inui. "While its vectorized simplicity is helpful in playing tennis normally, it's also much more easily overwhelmed by Eiji's afterimages than the more discerning normal vision is. To him, the opposing court is so full of overlapping vectors that he must be having problems spotting the ball against the backdrop, much less returning it."

Meanwhile, on Rikkai's part of the sidelines, another analysis of the game was in progress.

"Interesting," murmured Yanagi Renji as he observed the game through the rapidly moving blips on his mental map. "Kikumaru's images appear to be moving randomly as if in a distraction, but he's not really moving randomly at all."

Sanada turned to look at their team strategist. "You've noticed a pattern to his movements?"

"It's not that," Yanagi replied. "Kikumaru is actually moving in formation. It's just that he's switching quickly between several formations, thus utilizing the advantages of each while covering their weaknesses at the same time."

Kirihara scratched his head. "Ne, I'm not a doubles player, but I thought you need to have both players in the right place to make a formation."

*WHACK* Another Moon Volley rose out from somewhere in the middle of all the Kikumaru's and planted itself on the baseline of one corner. *THUD*

"Yes," Yanagi affirmed. "Oishi takes the shortest route to changing from one formation to the other. For instance, from double-up to Oishi Territory to double-back. Kikumaru covers all possible formations from wherever his partner is moving. Meanwhile, his movement prevents his opponents from observing Oishi's constant rearrangements of the entire court strategy, leaving Oishi able to effortlessly control the entire game."

The entire Rikkai team took a moment to quietly sympathize as the score became 5-3 in favor of Seigaku.

"Truly, the formation-play of the Golden Pair is formidable, sa." Yukimura finally murmured.

"But there is one weakness to it," Sanada observed. "Such prolonged and fast movements must be taxing on Kikumaru's stamina. Look."

Indeed, after his last rocket shot for the game point, Eiji had stayed where he had tumbled to the ground. His partner was trying unsuccessfully to rouse him, and finally had to resort to bodily pulling him up from the ground and then carefully arranging him to stand before the net. There he remained for the rest of the next game, which quickly went to Rikkai despite Oishi's best efforts.

Back at Seigaku's sidelines, Momo yanked at the wire fence in frustration. "Oh no! Eiji-senpai's out of batteries again, just like against St. Rudolph two years ago!"

Kaidoh frowned and turned to Inui. "Do you think Kikumaru-senpai will recover in time, Inui-senpai?" He was obviously also thinking of the same incident.

"Given the abilities of the Rikkai doubles pair, it is unlikely that Oishi will be able to hold out for as long as he did against St. Rudolph. The chances of Eiji recovering before Rikkai finishes the game is approximately 40%." Inui adjusted his glasses at the frustrated looks the two freshmen gave him. "However..."

"However?" Momoshiro and Kaidoh asked, unconsciously in unison.

A burst of motion interrupted them as the previously motionless Eiji suddenly burst out in a flurry of afterimages again, slamming the ball back with his Kikumaru Rocket at 40-love.

Looking on as the revitalized Golden Pair proceed to sweep the rest of the game and match, Inui finished his sentence. "However, Eiji has a way of defying previous data at unpredictable times."

His two kouhai, however, were too busy cheering the Golden Pair's win to hear him.

It was only luck (or fate) that, on leaving the stadium after the matches, three of the Rikkai team members would again cross paths with Seigaku's Golden Pair. Oishi almost didn't even see them approach, concentrated as he was on fussing over the bandage covering his partner's temple.

"Saa. It seems like you recover your stamina faster than ever, Kikumaru-kun," Yanagi addressed the redhead.

Eiji stopped swatting at his partner's hands and shooting smug looks at Yagyuu and Niou, who where standing behind Yanagi, and grinned cheekily at Rikkai's data-man.

"Of course I did. Oishi and I made a bet that if we won by 6-4, he'll have to do whatever I want for the rest of day!" He announced in triumph.

Oishi froze as he suddenly became the center of attention. "Er--eh?"

Niou, ever the trickster, was almost convulsing from the effort of holding back some smart remark. Unsurprisingly, he lost the fight for self-control, and burst out with, "so he's all yours for the day, huh?" There were all kinds of innuendo heaped onto that statement.

Oishi blushed three shades of red. Eiji appeared to be oblivious. "Yep! I won the bet!"

"I'm not sure he really lost," Yanagi murmured, watching Oishi turn two more shades of red.

"So... what are you going to make him do first?" Niou asked, faintly leering. Yagyuu rolled his eyes behind his glasses at his partner's antics.

"Anou..." Eiji thought for a moment, ignoring Oishi's shushing motions. "Ah! I know! There's a new ice cream place opening near my place! Oishi's going to treat me to try out all the flavors! Yatta!"

"Eh?!" Oishi winced at the hit on his wallet.

But Eiji had already looped his arms around Oishi's. "See you later, Rikkai! C'mon Oishi, let's go!"

The remaining trio from Rikkai merely stared as the Golden Pair departed, one still stuttering as the other dragging him along.

Niou turned to his partner in disbelief. "Ice cream?!"

"Not everyone has a dirty mind like yours," Yagyuu shot back.

Yanagi just chuckled, secure in the personal data he had obtained on the Golden Pair from Inui Sadaharu. If they only knew...

Notes 1: This is what happens when God (aka two fangirls) get awind of the fact that some doubles pair not only beat their favorite pair, but also gave one of them a concussion. While we love to torment those characters we love, one shivers to think what we would do to characters we *dislike*.

Notes 2: There might be a tad too much technical information about tennis in this fic. Blame it on the fact I actually did research on doubles play before writing. Well, it's better than mangling the game, right? ...right?
