Visit to cousin's place: Got net access, finally, as can be shown in the previous entry. Also took a peek at last term's grades... not good, let's not talk about that. Cousin Y seems to be into U.S. movies a lot. He has the extended editions for the first two LOTR films too, with the third on the way. They're legal editions obtained by mail order too. Wow. I didn't expect him of all people to be a LOTR fan (though really, from our conversation, he doesn't seem to be as much a *fan* as a connosieur).

This evening I went shopping with my aunt and cousin J. I got some more hair accessories. Tally (in RMB's): Furball band (8), furry band (12), brown barret band (20), light blue clip (30).

Also looked everywhere in the music/CD shops for the theme song to 大汉天子, but no luck. I might have to give up and just hope to find it on baidu or something. I did pick up a CD with the soundtracks to all the Four Classics, as well as another MP3 album of one of my favorite artists.

Finally was able to catch some time online. It's only been 2 weeks, yes? :p At least I've been able to avoid withdrawal by spending all my time glued to the TV. I foresee that much of my time after I get back will be spent glued to [insanejournal.com profile] cashew's WinDVD. *smirk*

And just to rile things up, a couple of words: X-Files. Complete DVD set. Prince of Tennis anime.

When I get back, I'll type up the backlog to my journal so I won't have a huge blank spot on my calendar. Until then, this is probably the only day I'll have access to the net. Speaking of which... I don't seem to have any problems logging onto GJ at all.

Later.

Day 7

Must hug and give mucho thanks to cousin Y. One word: bootleg. Too many titles to count. At 5.50 RMB per DVD disk and 3 RMB per software. I bought like 610 RMB of stuff. Yowza.

Tally:

DVD's that are getting returned/switched for (27 disks total):
* 西游记 - bad quality video and sound
* 铁齿铜牙I & II - parents already have 'em
* Vampire Miyu - disks doesn't work
* Ranma 1/2 - bad quality animation
* Inu Yasha - bad quality animation

Remaining DVD titles (in order of quality):
* 大汉天子 - Best quality. Only missing the pretty theme songs.
* 隋唐英雄传 - Also good quality.
* 血色浪漫 - Fairly good, actually. Mom loved the show.
* 红楼梦 - Surprisingly good quality for an old flick.
* 戏说乾隆 - Has video contrast problems, but the images are clear.
* 三国演义 - Surprinsinly poor quality. Skippy. Annoying English subbing. But the legal version is waaaay too expensive.
* X-Files - The volume is a bit faint, but the video is just fine.
* Prince of Tennis - Excellent image quality. Japanese dialogue with Chinese subbing.
* Yu Yu Hakusho - see above.
* Card Captor Sakura - Okay quality. Chinese dubbing.
* Lain - Fair quality. Chinese subbing.

Software titles:
* Windows XP
* Photoshop 8
* Dreamweaver
* some misc. disks of various software.

Day 5

Merry Xmas? Is it Christmas eve yet in the U.S.? Well, I can't tell by it here except for the supposed "on sale" stuff everywhere. Mom and I went to one of the new American-style supermarkets that's popped up everywhere in China these last couple of years. It was very amusing and eerily familiar: the push-carts, the sidewalk "parking lot" just for bikes, the underground lot for cars...

Final tally (all numbers in RMB's)
* white formal hair clip - 35
* grey pants - 143
* jeans - 79 (Finally, the right price range for clothing.)
* "New Police Story" for [insanejournal.com profile] cashew - 8.90
* <<黑猫警长>> 上&下 - 16.80 each
* <<哪吒闹海>> - 14.80
* slippers - 12.90
* a sample of rabbit meat (haunch portion) - 4.14
* Snoopy wallet - 18

The VCD movies are so very expensive because they aren't bootleg versions. I figured that the later two titles are probably pretty hard to find on the bootleg market, so I might as well pick 'em up as I see them.

I also wanted to find net access today to at least log on a Holiday's greeting or something, but Mom was not compliant. Blast. So far I haven't even found a net bar yet. Though... at least I'm either too busy or distracted to have withdrawal (yet).
