tanithryudo: (Elf Maid)

Yep. More of them. I spent mucho hours on ffnet again today. Though instead of browsing straight through the archives, this time I went rec-hopping... that is finding a good author and then looking through her "favorite stories" list, finding good fics there and going to their author pages... lather, rinse, repeat.

Glorfindel's Return - One shot. Humor. Totally OOC and the ignore the messed up timeline. The sheer laughter I got from this one was worth it. *g*

Confessions of a Sharp Glance - Seven chapter Silmarillion fic. Basically, the tale of Maeglin's life told by Maeglin in the Halls of Mandos. I like this one in that he doesn't bother to deny or hide the madness and Shadow in him which caused so much pain and death. He tells himself for what he truly is... and yet, through the tale, I still can't feel a glimmer of sympathy and pity for him along with the revulsion.

Well-made - a humor/parody one shot. There's a lot of "anti" genre fics out there... anti-Mary Sues, anti-slash... but this one can be said to be anti-rape, I guess. There's many fics out there where a plot device has the "fragile" elf getting caught and violated by unnamed ruffian men, usually in prelude to a hurt/comfort slashfic. Well, this fic puts a dose of reality, so to speak, on the designs of one such unnamed ruffian when he tries to jump the wrong "fragile" elf. *evil grin*

Misinformation - another humor fic. There's 3 chapters, each of which is a standalone story. All of them revolve around the idea of "misinformation". Basically, hilarious misunderstandings and miscommunications in a conversation. Features mainly the Fellowship and takes place post-ROTK. (Note: the first one's the funniest; the other two are only so-so.)

And the best for last, instead of a fic, I'm going to link the author, 'cause she has so many good fics: Marnie

She seems to be a Celeborn fan, the first I've seen, and she certainly does the Silver Lord justice! Most of her fics are Celeborn-centric, though she does do quite well by the other major figures in his life. I'll give a short summary of the fics I read...

Those Who Remain - One shot. A heart to heart conversation between Celeborn and Samwise Gamgee after the departure of the ringbearers from Middle-earth. They've got more alike than meets the eye.

The Lure of Taur na Rhun - One shot, fairly short. The first meeting of Celeborn and (who shall later be known as) Treebeard in the twilight years before the coming of the sun.

Magnetic Force - One shot. The ufo sightings and claims of betwitchments by the sidhe explained! Seriously, it's a interesting interpretation of the whole ME as the ancient history of Earth mythos, as well as an answer to the fate of the Elves who remained in ME. Bit of a creepy ending tho.

The Battle of the Golden Wood - 20 chapter work in progress, but well written enough that I'm going to rec it even if it's a WIP. Basically, it tells of the battles fought in/by the Lorien elves during the Quest of the Ring. It starts right after the Fellowships leaves Lothlorien, and the last chapter takes place just as Dol Guldor falls.

Oak and Willow - 12 chapter work in progress and my favorite one of the stories by this author. This is basically the story of the meeting and courtship between Celeborn and Galadriel - but it's also the story of the coming of the Noldor to ME... with one twist: it's told mainly from the POV of the Sindar elves.

The Silmarillion, after all, was written by the Noldor from a Noldor point of view. After reading through this fic, I can't help but agree that a lot of the (subtly said yet long-standing) details from the Silmarillion make a whole lot more sense considered alongside the typical Noldor arrogance and ambition. Are the elves who chose to stay on ME because they loved the land really so powerless, easily-corrupted, easily-awestruck, uncivilized, etc. from their shining Noldor cousins returned from Aman (in exile)? The Silmarillion says yes... but what about the other side of the story?

And I gotta love Doriath for one thing: it produced male rulers who are perfectly happy to wed and love female rulers who are more powerful and grand than they are. :D You don't see that among the Noldor.
