LOTR fanfic recs

Continuing my LOTR kick today, I went to FFnet and spent mucho hours reading fics there. I think it's a sign that I've read way too many fics in general and LOTR fics in specific that most of the fics that I chose to read from glancing through the summaries were good ones - or at least palatable. Surprising, since I find that I tend to go for more canon interpretations of LOTR when it comes to fanfics nowadays (as compared to, say Rurouni Kenshin or Harry Potter), especially when it comes to romantic pairings. LOTR slash might be okay to read when I'm bored or something, but I tend to enjoy the canon pairings (and I don't mean the movie-verse subtextual ones,
cashew) more.
Anyway, I just want to rec some fics in case
ossian might find any of them worth reading. I've already saved them to my harddrive. Oh and I skipped the WIP's, since I've got enough of those to keep track of already.
Sapphire Aurae is a 10 chapter story starring Elrond and Celebrian, from their wedding to their reunion post-ROTK. The story mainly focuses on their love in relation to the equally demanding burden of Elrond also being bound to Vilya, the Ring of Air. Here we see the the dangers of being a ringbearer of even one of the lesser rings, and the dangers of being married to a ringbearer through both Celebrian and Celeborn.
My favorite chapter is when Aragorn brings in the wounded Frodo for Elrond to heal, and the when the Elf Lord sees the One Ring hanging from Frodo's neck, he has his turn to deal with the temptation of the One Ring. The author is right - we see the temptation of Galadriel and Gandalf in the books and movies, but we're never told of the trial of the third bearer of the Three. I think that particular chapter captures quite chillingly what temptation and corruption the Ring might try and play upon Elrond. The bleak future that it depicts had Elrond succumbed at that moment was truly frightening and sad as well.
Blood and Water is a one-shot piece that's one of those fics which try to tie certain scenes of the movie into the book. This one is of the scene in the ROTK epilogue shots, when Arwen is presented to Aragorn. This author must've been like me, who wasn't paying any attention to Arwen and Aragorn when watching that scene, but Elrond instead. :p Although most of the LOTR movies make Elrond out to be a rather pessimistic, well, stick-in-the-mud... he does have a few moments, especially in the extended versions, where I go "now *that's* more like the wise and fatherly Master Elrond we know and love from the books".
(As a side note, I just wanna state officially that, as main writer for the LOTR arc on 2.0 and the Afterlife followup to that, I'm gonna take shameless advantage of the fact that we wrote the arcs based only on the first movie. So I'm not going to acknowledge certain scenes from TTT and ROTK such as Elrond talking Aragorn into letting Arwen go, or Arwen's aborted trip to the Grey Havens, or heck, let's retcon out as much of Elrond's pessimistic view of Men as a whole altogether... and it's probably a good thing our version overwrote the whole "men are weak" speech from FOTR... I want the *nice* Elrond who we only get flashes of in the movie, goshdarnit. :D)
Back on the topic of fanfics...
Theivery is another one-shot movie-based fic. Arwen gets to deal with reactions to her stealing Glorfindel's horse to go Nazgul-racing. A very fluffy and sweet fic with some subtle strokes of humor... especially the scene where her brothers get all huffy and protective, which in turn gets them into trouble with Daddy as well. *heh*
To Choose A Fellowship is a one-shot mixed book/movie setting humor fic. It mainly features Glorfindel, who disagrees with the choices for the Fellowship... but an elf has been chosen for the Nine Walkers already, so what's he to do? No worries, our former lord of Gondolin has a plan... Okay, so the fic has a few minor plot holes in it, and a mild case of OOC... but those I can forgive in the name of humor, which this piece does very well.
Hm... maybe I should make some LOTR userpics tomorrow... *ponders*
