I don't think they really needed the whole "dragon sickness" thing. They did a pretty good job making Thorin out to be a douche in the first two movies (IMO anyway, the slash fandom still loved him) so it would've been believable to me if he just continued being a douche in movie three, and then had a moment of regret while dying (deathbed redemption and all that). But I guess they didn't want to make one of their main protagonists evil I guess.
