Summary: In at least four other timelines, P3R-233 was a dead world, burned by the wrath of Apophis. In this timeline, the butterfly effect saved their civilization, but can it save their future?
Prometheus Bound
Stargate Command, July 1997 CE
- decide to visit the planet on the bottom of the PPT list, P3R-233, presumably the most recently inducted world
- probe sent through the gate, video/sensors show no DHD but does show a Hammer; also shows a large building full of random tech of various origin
- speculates it looks like an Area 51...another SGC?
- finally finds a lifesign; appears to be a fairly elderly man who reacts to the open gate and probe with surprise and some fear; informs probe they are protected by the Asgard and they're not a threat to the Goa'uld
- eventually some kind of two-way communications is established over the wormhole
- the rep from the alien government is very nervous about the gate
- they eventually tell their story: they were a pretty advanced race who started exploring the stargate and picking up tech; they ran into a few skirmishes with the Goa'uld who decided they were too advanced and thus a threat; their military infiltrators managed to send a message from Apophis' capital that he was sending ships to bombard them; they did their best to resist but their entire fleet and all in-system stations/colonies were wiped out; the Goa'uld had just started to bombard the planet when the Asgard stepped in and forced them to the negotiation table
- in the end, the natives were forced to give up stargate travel any attempts to become a military threat; the Goa'uld were going to demand removing the stargate, but the Asgard insisted they need it to track their protected planets and compromised by just removing the DHD; they also left the Hammer to prevent Goa'uld incursions, and also took with them something they called the quantum mirror
- since the planet is in Apophis' territory, they are watched by Goa'uld ships that often skirt the system
- the government and people have learned to live like sheep and are afraid of losing the protection of their treaty; thus they threw all the tech they'd previously found via gate into a single place and tried to forget about it
- they'd be happy to give it all away to Earth, but Earth needs to provide their own way there and back; they're not interested in long term relations with Earth for fear of the Goa'uld learning about it and thinking their conspiring to get out of their treaty agreements
- the local leader also advises Earth that they should be careful not to suffer the same fate as them
- Jack & co visit the planet (brought a generator and a remote dialer to get home)
- Jack plays around with stuff and accidentally activate one of the long range communicators
- Daniel picks up the comm he activated and Jack activates another one
- they temporarily switch bodies
- hilarity ensues until they could change back
- Daniel and Sam notices that all the scientists that they've talked to were old people
- found out that pretty much all scientific development that could be construed as a threat; and there's fewer and fewer people who go into science every generation; the society is in regression
- on leaving, a few of the scientists request going with them to Earth; they are ostracized on their own planet as a reminder of what caused the Fall
- Sam speaks on their behalf over the channel with Hammond, saying the natives' original level of tech is higher than where Earth is now and thus would be of great help to Earth science
- Jack thinks if they could help Earth become a force that can stand against the Goa'uld (they know the Tollan did it, and at least the Aschen who they haven't met yet as well), they might come back one day and vindicate themselves to their people; free them from the chains they've been shackled with
- Hammond comes back with the okay from the Pentagon to grant asylum on Earth to the refugees (they have to agree with live in SGC for the first few months until they're sure they can be adjusted to surface life)

Notes:
1. We don't know much about the planet where the quantum mirror was found, aside from that in three canon realities (as well as the "original" timeline here), the race was wiped out by Apophis, probably for being too advanced and thus a threat to Goa'uld rule. Given the many artifacts lying around the place, it's not hard to imagine this world had an SGC-like operation that just didn't have the character shields and luck that Earth did to dodge the bullets of a dangerous galaxy.
2. The butterfly that caused a difference in *this* reality is that the Asgard were on the lookout for the quantum mirror (foreshadowing) for their quantum research, and thus stepped in to save this particular planet as a side effect of that goal.
