Stolen Memories
Stargate Command, June 1997 CE
- Ambassador Joe Faxon arrives at the SGC briefing room
- reveals he was only given the very vague basics on the SGC due to security
- Daniel gives a basic report on the Galaran history
- Sam gives a report on the tech they're negotiating for, the memory device
- also go over stuff that they have which the Galarans might be willing to trade for
- Hammond reveals that SGD will be escorting the ambassador
- also going will be Dr. Duncan Hamilton from the NID
- why NID? because they're still in charge of SGC R&D
- disparaging comments about SGC R&D not turning out anything, unlike the Destiny Project R&D which gave them space guns and shuttles already
The next day
- everyone gathers at the meeting place
- Jack also bringing Freeman and Reilly in normal combat gear
- Faxon not happy about appearing belligerent but doesn't say anything since Sam is geared up too
- Hamilton makes pithy remarks about military
- Daniel gets uneasy since he's also geared up; Sha're jumps to his defense
- they go through the gate
- Jack is idly staring out a window; Freeman & Reilly behind him at the door
- turns around when he hears the door open and finds Daniel & Sha're
- got tired of the endless meetings?
- Daniel agrees, Sha're reveals they've both been pretty much ignored over the scientists/ambassador
- thinks it's because somehow the Galaran military has taken firm control of the operation (no offense)
- Jack says he got tired after one session, much less twice a day for three days
- Daniel tries to cheer them up; there's going to be a tomorrow night
- the door opens as the meeting is adjourned
- Faxon requests going back to Earth
- Jack sighs and leads the way
- Faxon calls Sam behind and asks her out as his date for the party
- Sam says she can't since she'll be on escort duty
- SGD comes to Hammond's office
- impressions?
- Daniel says they seem to be very impressed by the tech Faxon was allowed to bring up; they're also studying hyperspace, and are also interested in energy weapons tech (improved lasers, experimental plasma, stunners, zats), and fusion power; it's like a mirror of SGC interests
- Sam says her impressions on going over the info on the memory device indicates it's a lot like Ancient neural tech, but more primitive; probably the goa'uld got their memory device based on Ancient tech
- so can't they just make a better version of it based on neural tech in the Destiny db?
- not really since the Galarans had longer to understand the science of it; if Earth can get the info/prototype they won't have to spend as much R&D on it (no excuses for the NID)
- Hammond wonders why things are taking so long then, since they got a mining treaty with Abydos really fast
- Jack jokes they married into Abydos
- Sam notes it's strange that they keep moving the topic from day to day (one day they're interested in trading one thing and the next day they want to hear about something else)
- Jack wonders if they're actually sincere
- Daniel thinks they are, just careful; he's worried about the sanctity of memory once they do get the tech
- Jack muses that they've already got their memories scrambled by Destiny and other aliens; what's another?
- Hammond reminds them they're to attend the party; also tells Sam she's excused from guard duty if she wants to accompany Faxon
- Sam is slightly unhappy he went to Hammond behind her back, but Daniel/Jack is oblivious and tell her it's fine with them since they don't really forsee any dangers
- Jack also thinks Daniel should go formal and take his wife out on a real date
- Daniel has minor panic about clothes
- Jack suggests Sam take them shopping
- Sam says she doesn't need to shop for a dress and it's obvious she's not happy
- Jack gets the idea and offers to have Sara go with them instead, as long as he doesn't have to go with
- At the party, Jack & the Lt.'s in combat gear are lurking on the edges of the party; guests generally avoid them due to their armaments
- Sam is in dress blues; she and Faxon are talking w/ the emissary
- Daniel and Sha're are hanging out with the scientists (Varrick, Marell)
- eventually Daniel and Sha're comes to talk to Jack; notes they look bored
- Jack notes that the security is military and professional; not expecting much danger here
- Sha're looks around and wonders where Sam & Faxon went
- Jack raises his radio before realizing they didn't carry one in formal wear
- Daniel jokes that hopefully they didn't drink too much and do something they'll regret; the scientists told them the alcohol levels of the punch
- Jack is not happy
- Next morning, Sam and Faxon wake up in a guest room bed together, but still fully dressed
- very awkward, Sam leaves the room first
- eventually finds her CO and the guards at a breakfast table
- Jack tells her Dr. Hamilton, Daniel, & Sha're already left back for Earth, but that their hosts told them that the ambassador and Sam spent a night in the guest room
- Sam is embarrassed and says they just fell asleep
- Jack tells her it's her business since she's off duty
- Faxon joins them with the emissary, who apologizes for not warning about their alcohol
- Jack says they need to report back
- they're invited to come back in a few days
- Sam is embarrassed and avoids people, but also gets strange cases of deja vu
- she finally confides in Janet about (Faxon?) headaches
- Janet does some tests, which shows some strange readings, which Janet realizes are similar to post-neural interface brain states (Sam has always had adverse effects to it)
- they get Dr. Hamilton in on the readings, and begin to think something happened to Sam's memories on Galar
- they bring it up to Hammond, who is outraged
- Daniel is worried that Faxon might be a victim too
- when Faxon comes back to SGC, and is skeptical about their findings; thinking it's just Sam overreacting to what happened
- Sam is upset that he doesn't take her concerns seriously at all
- the next time they come back, there's mandatory screening for everyone
- find out Jack and the 2 Lts. now shows signs of being affected; Jack the most
- none of them can remember anything odd about the boring hours they spent in the corridors
- finally when putting away their gear, Jack realizes the stunner that he'd taken as part of the standard equip is missing, but he does not remember using or taking it off at any time
- Hammond wants to call things off since they're not negotiating in good faith
- Faxon overrides him
- they go to the planet confronts the Galarans with their findings; no one notices Daniel doesn't go into the room but is distracted by Marell hiding in a corner
- the emissary claims they already found out a rogue scientist did it to use "aliens" as guinea pigs; they've already arrested Varrick and destroyed her illicit memory recordings
- Faxon tells him he's not sure they can continue negotiations at this rate
- emissary gives him a disk of the memory device information as a sign of good faith; promises an actual prototype and as many production models as Earth wants to order in the future
- the Terrans will have to think about it/talk to their govt
- they leave for Earth
- Jack asks Daniel where he's been
- Daniel reveals that Marell told him Varrick had found out that the military had been trying to scan them for secrets and thus save their tech to trade for more than they actually bargain for; she'd threatened to reveal things to SGC and was jailed; he felt guilty since he was the one the military forced to scan the SGC people and because he has feelings for Varrick; so he's making up for it all by giving them the real data (the stuff the emissary gave were doctored so that important elements were missing/wrong)
- Faxon says he needs to talk to the govt and goes into Hammond's office
- Sam wants to know what info they took
- Daniel says they tried to get technical info from Sam, which was disjointed b/c she has a rare bad reaction to the tech; but they got enough to learn about Destiny, which is why they went for Jack; unfortunately the stuff he got from Destiny are in Ancient, so they'll have a hard time deciphering it
- Faxon comes back and says the president has agreed to halt all relations with Galar and to no longer take visits from them until they can clean up their act
- Hammond & co. goes to send over the news
- Faxon asks Sam to stay behind; apologies for not believing her; says he'll be going back to DC soon; wonders if they can stay in touch
- Sam gently lets him down and says she thinks she'll be too busy but maybe they'll work together again one day
Followed by Prometheus Bound
Notes:
1. The irony of the Galarans is that they're practically a mirror of the SGC/NID relationship. This story could have easily be one going the opposite way - with the NID stealing info/tech and the SGC having an attack of conscience, causing the advanced alien race targeted to not think too badly of Earth but not want to deal further with them anyway. *coughcanonTollanscough*
