Pest Control

Stargate Command, Mar. 1997 CE

- briefing room
- report on the Asgard planet which Thor had obliquely requested O'Neill to investigate b/c the locals haven't set off any requests via the Asgard communication stations left behind but the human population has been steadily decreasing
- description of BP6-3Q1 via probe:
- planet just a little smaller than earth, 90% covered by oceans, one landmass with large bodies of fresh water and rich in minerals (and signs of trinium!)
- air has slightly higher oxygen content; no toxins or radiation detected; temperature is similar to Earth tropics
- several cities that appear to be near Earth level in advancement, but largely abandoned; some sporadic human life readings in deeper parts of the largest city near the gate; large insect population of really big bugs

- SG1 + support goes in with full body protective gear and stunners (bug zappers); attacked by bugs; fire back while retreating into the city
- come across an electrified fence/enclosure with piles of dead bugs around it; find one section that's been shorted out due to faulty circuitry and fried bug parts, and manages to get inside
- they find several many bodies in the enclosure; many appear to have died of starvation/thirst; three survivors that are still alive but very weak
- they wrap one of the people up and lug him back to the gate; the guy is stung by a bug before the team stuns the bugs off and hustles him into the gate

- Hammond authorizes "field test" the X-301 (SG-10) to retrieve the other 2 people
- Dr. Fraiser finds odd readings in the man's DNA; Destiny's probe sensors no longer show the victim as human
- since the other 2 rescuees don't exhibit the same readings; they speculate it was the bug bite that caused it
- Sam suggests Dr. Timothy Harlow from the Pentagon
- by the time he gets there, the affected man appears to be enveloped in a cocoon; has been placed into a quarantine room
- NID (Maybourne) shows up to try and take the cocoon; unfortunately it cocoon opens and releases bunch of flies before they could get him; one of the NID security people get stung and is dragged out by the other before the door is sealed
- base security is sent in with full body armor, gas masks, zats, and liquid nitrogen

- Later the security guy is showing effects of bugs; doctors have no idea how to reverse it; appears to be mentally affected; tries to escape but is cut off from upper levels
- just then the wormhole activates with SG-10 returning to Earth
- the victim rushes down to the gate room and jumps into wrong side of wormhole (which kills him)

A day later

- Hammond says the Pentagon isn't very happy with what happened and are thinking of write off the planet; want a cost benefit analysis
- Janet reports that the two other people they've rescued are awake and can probably answer some questions
- the two young men are revealed to be students in the Gard priesthood; give a brief overview of the Gard/Gemonite divide, the pilgrimage to Skaald which started the mess they're in
- after the initial crisis in the cities, people were able to improvise electric fences/bug zappers; but the bugs also took out all the people in rural areas and destroyed their food sources; common people in the cities were slowly starved; and it only takes one person who isn't careful to infect a well protected compound; birth rate was nil under the stress, and slowly attrition ate away their population
- the Gard students ask SGC to help save the rest of the survivors on the planet
- Hammond tells them that their government wasn't too sure about expending large amount of resources on the endeavor with no results
- they mention the artifacts of Thor used by the ancient Gemonite leader to do miracles; after the Svoriin advanced past the medieval era, they've also recognized that the artifacts where highly advanced pieces of technology that they've started to study
- Sam advises that Asgard tech (especially since the Asgard let the Svoriin use it and thus aren't restricted by their treaty) would be a very nice coup for Earth; also reminds everyone that there are trinium mines on the planet (even if it'd be hard to use them for now)
- Maybourne insists they get the tech first, just to make sure it is worth the effort
- eventually it's agreed to give Earth location of a remote holo generator, then Earth will help evacuate the Svoriin survivors, then they'll give Earth the rest of the item locations

Two weeks later

- conference call between SGC briefing room and Destiny conference room
- after figuring out the Svoriin computer systems, they've got the address of Skaald and downloaded various other info from the data centers that were still operational
- rescue process is slow: they take the shuttle, loaded with pesticide containers attached and start spraying the city near areas with survivors to create a clear zone for rescue to go in with stunners; bring any non-infected back for quarantine until incubation period passes; then send onto an empty planet; some initial resources have been provided from Earth & allies
- estimates that there'll only be about a few hundred survivors total
- Destiny is now directing the shuttles to remaining pockets of survivors further away from gate
- meanwhile, the scientists are really excited about the hologram tech, especially a lot of prelim research is already available from the Svoriin database
- they're also expecting a cloaking device, some kind of neural interface, and manufacturing/repair units out of the deal; the crystal computing tech they already have but it would be interesting to see the differences from Ancient tech
- so the Pentagon is happy to continue with the humanitarian efforts; President also wants things filmed to show off said humanitarian efforts in case of disclosure

New Svoriin, two months later

- small group of Svoriin refugees thank the SGC for their efforts; even though their numbers are decimated, they're glad that any of their population will remain as it is
- they promise not to play around with the gate until they're ready to handle what comes back through
- SG-1 gate back
- Hammond mentions making sure that no one accidentally carries the infestation off world
- Maybourne protests burying the Svoriin gate given the trinium still on the planet; NID wants to sterilize the planet and then go back for the mines
- Sam informs him they've studied the DHDs well enough to selectively disable the Svoriin and Skaald gate DHDs so that a remote dialer is required to leave the planet; also, sterilizing a whole continent is not very feasible and a waste
- Hammond says the state department will be working something out with the Svoriin survivors regarding their planet; they're hoping the bugs will eventually die out due to lack of prey; and as much as he doesn't like it, the NID is getting the remaining bug samples to see if they can find a faster way to kill them without nuking the place

Followed by Remembrance

Notes:
1. Made some changes to the description of Svoriin (RPG is not cannon :P) in order to make the plot work.
2. I don't think they found any uninfected survivors in "Bane", which took place in 1998. But there were still newly infected people, so I'll hazard to guess there are still some uninfected survivors in 1997. Also, it was said Teal'c symbiote was helping hold back the effects of the bug bites, and given how miraculous goa'uld symbiote healing works, I'm guessing that without it, a human wouldn't last very long at all.
