What back story? There was a back story? Seriously, the scene just popped into my head from the first line that was written. Attempts at asking Heiji have thus far been ignored. So... yeah... my impression that he went a lil over his head too, and it was sheer luck that got him through alive.
When you think about it... Shinichi was really really lucky too in his initial bout with the BO. I mean, 1/1000 chance of surviving that drug, after all. He probably used up all his karma on that one (and subsequently accrued karma on any temporary cures).
So if you put the two boys together, their Shinigami aura multiplies... hey, why not the karmic luck too? :P
