tanithryudoFandom related rant concerning 75 slash and various 焦剧 related fanfics...
So, I started out reading Chinese fanfics with 《七侠五义》 slash, about 90% of which involves the 白玉堂x展昭 pairing, AKA 鼠猫. Leaving the quality of Chinese yaoi fics aside, that's fine, when I'm actually looking to read about that pairing. But as I look around for fics in other series which had the same actor as 展昭, I realize the unfortunate fact that many of the authors must have also first came out of the 75鼠猫 fandom, because it seems like there is nowhere I can escape its shadows.
Let's start with other pairings inside the 75 fandom. Ignoring the het fics (which appears to be mostly based on the 《包青天》 version 展昭 anyways), I'm mainly looking for 仁宗x展昭 (龙猫) fics. There is pitiful little of them of decent length to begin with. But the few which are significant all seem to -- whether the author is doing it on purposes or unconsciously -- have 白玉堂 in there as part of a triangle relationship. *headdesk* I'm trying to get away from that character when I'm reading 龙猫 fics, but there's no hope of that here.
OK, so you think, if I'm reading fics in other fandoms that the actor for 75展昭 played in, I should be able to escape 白玉堂, right? Ugh... I guess that's too much to ask.
《宝莲灯》 and its prequel are the more recent popular show featuring that actor. IMO, I don't think the character of 二郎神 even as depicted in the show itself is really suited to slash, no matter how good his looks. But, of course that doesn't stop there from being slash written about that fandom. I can understand that. But why must most of the pairings to the slash fics in that fandom be 太白金星x杨戬... where 太白金星 is taken from yet another show where he's played by the same actor as 75白玉堂? Why? The two characters have no on-screen chemistry, and their personalities are miles apart from being even able to communicate on the same wavelength! 太白金星 is NOT 75白玉堂! And BLD二郎神 is NOT 75展昭 (oh I can write a whole separate rant about this)! Where are all of these equal signs and reincarnation fics coming from?
And then there is 李寻欢 from 《小李飞刀》 and its sequel. The slash fics for this guy runs toward 杨逍x李寻欢, where 杨逍 is again from one of the versions/spinoffs of 《倚天屠龙记》 as played by the actor who played 75白玉堂. OIZ. The fail part of this pairing is that both of these characters are not only canonically straight as an arrow, but also canonically heads over heels for their one twue wuv. To have them forget about that one twue wuv, you'd basically have to ignore their backstory AND 90% of the shows themselves... at which point, you're basically writing an original fic and not these two characters!
(Of course later on 《泪痕剑》 came out and 李寻欢x卓东来 became popular, but that's another discussion.)
I dunno... I don't see this kind of behavior in western slash. I mean, not that I've actually gone and looked for it, but I don't see fics that confuse Orlando Bloom's Legolas for Paris or Will Turner... or Zachary Quinto's Spock for Sylar (from Heroes)...
Should I just blame this on a general tendency of Chinese fic authors to fail at recognizing characterization (much less write it)? I mean, if I were to write it (not that my Chinese is good enough to write a fic), it would go something like this...
太白: HI! *big silly smile*
杨戬: *ignores*
太白: HI! *follows and makes faces*
杨戬: *ignores*
太白: ...
杨戬: *goes off plotting other stuff*
太白: *engages in shenanigans*
杨戬: 打入天牢!
太白: T_T
李寻欢: *arrives due to time travel plot device*
杨逍: 哪个门派来送死的？
李寻欢: 诗音! 诗音! *weeps*
杨逍's daughter: 好英俊的公子! @_@
杨逍: ...
李寻欢: *coughs* *spits blood* *faints*
