tanithryudo: (Plot Bunnies)

This is inspired by the "GATE" manga volume 1, by Hirotaka Kisaragi [insanejournal.com profile] cashew and I were squealing over today. And yes, this also led to more insane crossover ideas for our PoT Psidai universe.

First of all, according to much research, it seems that there's only 2 volumes out for Gate currently, and only one of them's out in the US. I'm not sure if Vol. 2 is even published yet, so it might not be out in the US for a while. But on the bright side, when I was looking up other manga by Kisaragi-sensei, it was glaringly obvious that the mangaka is so a shounen-ai/yaoi author. *grin* Maybe we'll see more of other stuff by Kisaragi-sensei too...

So the story of GATE revolves around the four mystical guardian-beast-gods who take possesssion of four hot bishounen guys. Naturally, with Psidai, they're going to be taking over the big-four of our characters: Tezuka, Atobe, Sanada, and Tachibana.

But first, we have to get some info on the four gods: Seiryuu, Suzaku, Byakko, and Genbu. They're very popular themes in a lot of manga/anime already, from Yu Yu Hakusho to Fushigi Yuugi. I didn't get much info on the GATE interpretations, since there's not a lot of info sites on that available. But I was able to get some info on the general mythology from the various Fushigi Yuugi fansites.

The four gods in terms of Feng Shui

Seiryuu (青龍)
Animal: Dragon
Element: Water
Color: Blue / Green / Aqua
Direction: East
Season: Spring
Virtue: Propriety
Function: supports and maintains the country (controls rain, symbol of the Emperor's power)
Fushigi Yuugi symbolism: authority and strength
Feng Shui symbolism: Yang force, authority, prosperity
Portrayal: surrounded by water or clouds
Notes: (1) The "heart of the Dragon" in terms of astronomy is the Pleiades. (2) It's often paired with the Phoenix, for the two represent both conflict and wedded bliss.

Suzaku (朱雀)
Animal: Red Bird / Peacock / Hou-ou (Pheonix)
Element: Fire
Color: Red
Direction: South
Season: Summer
Virtue: Knowledge
Function:
Fushigi Yuugi symbolism: romance and love
Feng Shui symbolism: binds Yin and Yang, providing equilibrium
Portrayal: radiant feathers, and an enchanting song; only appears in times of good fortune
Notes: (1) The Hou-ou/Pheonix also represents the sun, justice, obedience, and fidelity. (2) It appears very rarely, and only to mark the beginning of a new era, such as the birth of a virtuous ruler. (3) It's both a symbol of peace when it appears and a symbol of disharmony when it disappears. (4) The Feng Huang was believed to control the five tones of traditional Chinese music and to represent the Confucian virtues.

Byakko (白虎)
Animal: Tiger / Kirin (later substituted by the Japanese)
Element: Wind (according to GATE & mythology) and Metal (according to mythology)
Color: White
Direction: West
Season: Fall
Virtue: Righteousness
Function: guards Buddha's teachings and mankind; observes world with clairvoyance
Fushigi Yuugi symbolism: ferocious defense
Feng Shui symbolism: Yin force, communication, patience, maternal protection
Portrayal: unicorn-like creature (but GATE uses the earlier Tiger portrayal)

Genbu (玄武)
Animal: tortoise-like chimera with head and tail of a serpent / Warrior
Element: Earth (according to GATE)
Color: Black
Direction: North
Season: Winter (associated with cold)
Virtue: Faith
Function: ...is always listening?
Fushigi Yuugi symbolism: endurance, wisdom, and longetivity; in terms of divination
Feng Shui symbolism: alliance between Heaven & Earth, longevity, protection, the house.
Portrayal: In artwork, often shown together with the snake.
Notes: (1) Is completely versed in Buddha's teachings. (2) Symbollic of a long life and happiness; also stands for immutability and steadfastness. (3) When it becomes one thousand years old, it is able to speak the language of humans. (4) Able to foretell the future.

Misc. Notes:
Y'know, I want to see when our characters try to get back together and open the Gate so the four beasts can return to their own realm, the beasts have apparently decided to stay behind and instead call down their constellation-servants (7 each), which takes over the various guys from Seigaku, Hyotei, Rikkai, etc. (I guess Tachibana also gets the guys from Rokkaku and Yamabuki as well because there's not enough people from Fudomine. :p)

...and the personalities of the 7 Seiryuu/Suzaku no Seishi from Fushigi Yuugi.

The Four Guardians/Beast-Gods:
Seiryuu - Tezuka (cuz he is GOD)
Suzaku - Atobe (he's a flaming diva with voice-based powers and a thing for Tezuka)
Byakko - Tachibana (well, he is righteous, and he's got sight-based powers)
Genbu - Sanada (last choice remaining to the slow tortoise, since the others didn't want to bother with his mirror aura)

The Seishuku (星宿) are called by their name, then +boshi. Eg. "Ami Boshi", "Su Boshi", etc.

Sailor Moon
Fushigi Yuugi
Rurouni Kenshin (and find out it's actually the past of the original universe)
Smallville
Highlander
Alice Gakuen
Pokemon
Clamp-verse (X1999, Tokyo Babylon, Card Captor Sakura, XXXHolic, etc.)

Note: Everyone takes Transfigurations & Charms with their guardian spirits doing the work, and Astronomy because the spirits demand so, and DADA for their own reasons. So the lists here are classes outside of that, if any. Crossed out marks are dropped classes.
Available main classes: Transfigurations, Charms, DADA, Potions, History, Herbology
Available electives: Astronomy, Care of Magical Creatures, Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, Divination, Muggle Studies
