Senbatsu Doubles Rewrite
A Drabble in 200 Words
“Haaaah!” Inui leapt and smashed.
“Good move,” Sanada noted tonelessly.
“That was a mistake,” Mizuki disagreed as Fuji turned around to catch the ball. “Not with Fuji’s—”
“Higuma Otoshi!” called out Momo and Eiji in unison, having ditched their group’s practice session to come gawk.
Yanagi sent the lob shooting back to Fuji’s feet with his speed shot while the tensai was still half turned around, thus winning another point for the Data Pair.
“What did Fuji do that for?” Oshitari wondered, having also snuck away from his own group while Hanamura was busy dealing with Atobe’s insubordination. “That move is useless in doubles. That’s what the rearguard is for.”
“There was a 90% chance that Fuji’s ingrained reflexes would return any smash with Higuma Otoshi,” Inui could be heard mumbling.
“But you used it on us!” Momo said to Oshitari, indicating Eiji and himself.
“That’s because you two sucked as a doubles pair.”
Eiji immediately ditched his stranglehold on Kaidoh in favor of the Hyotei tensai. “You take that back! Let’s have a rematch, right now!”
“But Gakuto isn’t here…”
Sakaki refrained from rubbing his temples and silently cursed the other two coaches for letting their loonies out.

Yuuta gasped. “Aniki and Saeki-san have a perfect combination?”
Inui’s eyebrow twitched. He could feel Renji’s silent indignation rolling off in waves. They called that a “perfect” combination? Inui slightly altered his frontguard position, giving an implicit signal to his childhood partner.
Renji didn’t disappoint. They took the rest of the match with two and three hit rounds.
“No way!” Momo gaped. “How did you do that?”
Inui explained. “The strength of the Australian Formation is nullified…”
“…when you can narrow your calculations along the precise vector your partner will hit,” finished Yanagi.
They turned to each other and smiled.
