Miscalculations

On October 4th, Atobe threw a lavish birthday party at his mansion for himself and Tezuka. After the fact, Fuji insisted that the Seigaku boys throw a separate one just for their former buchou alone on October 7th, and it had to be one bigger and better than the one by Atobe. Unfortunately, in their haste to get everything organized in less than three days, a few minor details were missed.

“Hey everyone! Where’s Kaidoh?” Oishi raised the question as he checked off his list of attendees at the party.

“Yeah! I haven’t seen him around either,” Eiji agreed. “Oi, Momo, didn’t you remind him to come today?”

“Eh?” Momo looked up from stuffing his face with the entrees. “Me? I thought Inui-senpai was supposed to tell him, since they train together and all that.”

“Actually, I’ve been busy helping organize the party for the last three days,” Inui spoke up. “So we haven’t been training together. I thought you were supposed to be the one to tell him, Momo. You do go to the same school, after all.”

“Wait,” Oishi broke in to stop the circle of recriminations. “Does that mean no one told him about this party?” he asked to clarify matters.

The silence around him told him that he was correct.

“I’ll call him,” Inui offered.

“Uh, you might not want to bother,” Momo spoke up nervously. “Y’see, there was this accident with this cell phone… uh, yesterday in our match…”

Oishi sighed. “Inui, why don’t you go and bring him here,” he said, taking it as a matter of fact that Inui would know where to find him.

“I’ll go with you, Sadaharu,” Yanagi added. He had arrived with the Rikkai contingent at Atobe’s invitation. Then on Yukimura’s and Marui’s insistence, their team had remained for the second party as well. “I need to pick up some headache pills for Genichirou.”

“Aa, of course, Renji,” Inui agreed affably as the two of them left on their errand. “There is a 85% chance that Kaidoh is at the old tennis court where he and Momo usually have their after-school duels. There should be a drugstore on the way.”

When the data duo arrived at the aforementioned tennis court, however, it became apparent that someone else had reached Kaidoh first. Mizuki of St. Rudolph high school was already there with Yuuta in tow (despite the fact that the latter was still attending junior high), again trying in vain to convince Kaidoh to attend St. Rudolph next year. Of course, from Inui’s admittedly biased point of view, it looked rather like Kaidoh was unsuccessfully trying to fight off Mizuki's unwelcome advances. He growled as much under his breath.

Yanagi looked amused. “While it does seem that Mizuki-kun’s method of persuasion is oddly similar to molestation, I really don’t think that, ah, ‘poor, innocent, and defenseless’… are the proper terms of description for Kaidoh-kun.”

Inui wasn’t listening. “I’m going to kill him,” he muttered as Mizuki grabbed Kaidoh’s hands, stepping with intent toward the St. Rudolph manager.

“I don’t think that’s necessary,” Yanagi countered as he yanked his friend back to where they were standing hidden from view. “Even if I don’t know your kouhai as well as you do, I am confident that there is at least a 72% chance that he will physically remonstrate the person annoying him in the next 15 seconds.”

Sure enough, Kaidoh had finally snatched his hands out of Mizuki’s grabby grip, and roughly shoved the older boy out of his personal space. However, Mizuki could be incredibly persistent when he set his mind to something, and soon it appeared obvious that a tennis match had been proposed to settle the issue.

Kaidoh wasn’t certain how he got talked into the match. He always hated playing tennis for any purpose except to… well, play tennis. Did Mizuki have some kind of freaky persuasion power? Well, there was no help for it now. All he had to do was to beat the older boy, and hopefully Mizuki will drop the whole issue of him attending St. Ruldolph. The thought that he might lose and be forced to transfer out of Seigaku didn’t really occur to him.

However, before going into position to serve, Mizuki set the large bag that he had brought to the scene on the nearby ground. He untied the string, and the sides of the bag fell away to reveal a cat, probably a house pet by its collar that was kidnapped from some unlucky owner.

Kaidoh’s eyes widened as he saw the cat. The cat merely stared back at him as it began to groom itself, apparently in no hurry to leave despite having been lugged to this strange place in a bag. Kaidoh’s natural affinity for cute and fuzzy animals immediately kicked in.

He didn’t even see the first serve until it was over.

From Inui’s vantage point, he couldn’t see the animal that was the source of his kouhai’s difficulties as Kaidoh began to lose the match, badly. He had a death grip on his ever-present notebook as he mumbled absently under his breath.

“The probability of Kaidoh playing with anything but trying his best is almost at 0.0%. He has never played this bad. There is less than 1% probability that he is dissatisfied with going to Seigaku high school next year. This does not compute… it does not compute!

Yanagi, on the other hand, did have powers that allowed him to notice the probable reason of Kaidoh’s distraction. However, he was far too amused by the one-sided match on the courts and Inui’s reactions to say anything, and idly wondered if he could get away with taking advantage of this particular tactic in two years when Rikkai played Seigaku at the tournaments.

Meanwhile, Kaidoh’s stress levels were steadily rising. First Inui-senpai had called off their last three training sessions together. Then that stupid Momoshiro had ditched their afternoon match, after breaking his cell phone yesterday. Then, his other stalker from St. Rudolph had tried to talk him into transferring out of Seigaku yet again, and somehow dragged him into this stupid match. And he’d been carrying around a cat in that bag all this time, no doubt subjecting the poor creature to who-knows what kind of torture. And now, he was losing the match because he just… couldn’t… focus!

Finally, at 5-0, Kaidoh snapped. His eyes glowed bright for a moment and he let out a loud HSSST that was definitely more the sound of an angry cat than a snake.

He returned the next ball with a sharply cut Snake-shot that narrowly missed slamming into Mizuki’s face on the rebound. It was followed by a barrage of similarly treacherous Snake-shots and several Hadoukyuu Boomerangs, the total effect of which sent Mizuki dodging for his life.

The match ended a 7-5 win for Kaidoh, who was panting and hissing in a feline way on the ground. The net was in tatters, and both the St. Rudolph boys cringed away from the berserk monster across the court.

Frustrated at how things had gone utterly wrong from his plans, Mizuki took out his own stress by seizing the cat.

“Damn it! Why didn’t you work?! My data was perfect! He shouldn’t have been able to play at all with you there!” He shook the cat in his hands.

The cat simply hissed loudly and pounced on its captor. A cloud of dust rose up as boy and cat fought for supremacy. When it cleared, however, Mizuki was the one lying half-unconscious on the ground with the cat perched on his back, daintily cleaning off its paws.

Yuuta sweatdropped. “That is so embarrassing, Mizuki-san,” he sighed. Not wanting to pointlessly stick around more than he had to, and fully aware of what his brother might do to him if he didn’t make it to Tezuka’s (second) birthday party, Yuuta shooed off the cat and dragged Mizuki away.

Meanwhile, Inui and Yanagi were trying to corner Kaidoh, who was still stuck in feline mode. The cattish boy, however, didn’t seem to want to be caught, and was nimbly dodging both of them.

“This isn’t working,” Inui finally admitted, dropping the tennis racquet he had been trying to use as a lure. Apparently, it didn’t work the same way as Kaidoh’s bandanna had the previous year.

“No it’s not,” Yanagi agreed, walking over to him. “We need a plan.”

He leaned in to consult quietly with Inui on forming a strategy, since he didn’t want to take the chance that Kaidoh might still understand human speech in his current state. However, he was abruptly interrupted when Kaidoh… yowled… and pounced on him. The two of them crashed to the ground in a cloud of dust and limbs.

“Renji? Are you all right?”

“Do I look all right, Sadaharu?!” Yanagi snapped, prying with both hands at Kaidoh’s jaw and head. “Get him off! He’s chewing on my neck! It hurts!”

“Well, that is somewhat consistent with feline predatory behavior,” Inui pointed out as he cautiously approached the two of them.

“SADAHARU!!”

“Right.” Inui lunged forward, grabbed Kaidoh by the midriff, and yanked. It took a few tries to completely detach Kaidoh from Yanagi, but they finally did succeed in doing so. Kaidoh struggled in Inui’s hold, sending Inui to the ground in a sitting position with Kaidoh in his lap, but the older boy had him in a firm hold and wasn’t about to let go.

Yanagi was gasping as he clambered to his feet. “Sadaharu,” he told Inui firmly, “I’m never getting involved with your… affairs again. Your crush here is a little too territorial for my comfort.”

“Renji! What are you saying?!” Inui protested half-heartedly. He supposed he shouldn’t be too surprised that Renji had figured out his feelings for his kouhai, given how he had been acting earlier. However, he wasn’t sure if he should be happy about Kaidoh being supposedly territorial, or if that was just wishful thinking.

Yanagi shook his head, his hands still massaging his neck where he had been gnawed on. “I’m heading back,” he announced, eager to get away. “I’ll tell them you two might be late.” Then he turned and hurried away before Inui could protest.

Inui sighed as he found himself alone with a lapful of Kaidoh still squirming in his arms, though now it was less so to get out of his grip than it was out of discomfort. Arranging the both of them more comfortably, he tugged off Kaidoh’s bandanna and idly ruffled through his kouhai’s black hair as he wracked his brains for some way to get Kaidoh back to normal again. And… wait a minute… was that Kaidoh… purring?!

Oh, if only the human mode Kaidoh would show him the same kind of affection that the cat mode was currently…
