Erh, the Apiata is an OC race created for the TBG thread, not a canon Trek species. It was created by the main author and mainly characterized by several omake writers. (Of which I am now one!)

The Quest doesn't really go for scientific accuracy either as much as taken in the spirit of TOS and its cheesy 60s-80s Hollywood science.

That said, canon Trek, even for its progressiveness in some aspects, also had its limits. TNG had an episode where they had a basically asexual race and one of them fell in love with Riker (I guess a metaphor for homosexuality at the time, but more like LJBTQ in retrospect). The writers wanted to cast a male actor in the role, and so did Jonathan Frakes, but the studio insisted on a female actor. *shrug*
